1620-22; and Elizabeth b. 1625From: Miner Family by Lillian Lounsberry (Miner) Selleck: The name of Palmer
was originally a common title of those who had returned from the Holy Land, and
who carried a palm branch as a token of their pilgrimage. Thus, in Scott's
Marmion, "There is a holy Palmer come, From Salem first, and last from Rome."
It became a common surname in England, and several of the same founded families
in New England previous to 1635. Walter Palmer was an early settler in
Charlestown, Mass., with Abraham Palmer, probably a brother, who was a merchant
from London and a sergeant in the Pequot War. Walter was a Constable at
Charlestown in 1633, and with his second wife was admitted to the church 1 Jun
1633. In 1642 he removed to Rehoboth, and was Deputy to the Plymouth General
Court in 1645. In 1652, he joined his son-in-law Thomas Miner, with others in
the settlement at Wequentenock, Conn., which became Stonington. Here he died 10
Nov 1661. His will, dated 19 May 1658 mentioned his wife, son John, daughter
Grace (who recieved twenty shillings), sons Jonas and William, Children Elihu,
Nehemiah, Moses, Benjamin, Gershom, Hannah, and Rebecca; and gave all his
grandchildren twenty shillings apiece. The name of his first wife has been
stated as Ann, also as Elizabeth, but the best authorities do not specify her
name. He married second, probably in 1633, Rebecca Short, who had been a
member of Eliot's Church in Roxbury. (P. 140.)IGI (1988) Walter Palmer md Ann Elizabeth Short 1610 and sld 12 Oct 1982JR,
