Notes: McGwire's walk was 135th, moving him within 35 of Ruth's single-season record set in 1923... Cordova had allowed only one run in 17 2-3 innings before yielding McGwire's homer -- the 439th home run of his career, moving him past Andre Dawson into sole possession of 22nd place. McGwire is three homers behind Dave Kingman, his favorite player as a youngster... The Cardinals purchased Eversgerd's contract from Triple-A Memphis before the game and sent down Manny Aybar, who started Friday in New York... The Pirates have at least 10 hits in eight of their last nine games.

IN THE DUGOUT: Cardinals pitching coach Dave Duncan might have to start working on his speed. Duncan wanted to make a pitching change and was about 10 steps out of the dugout when pitcher Rich Croushoure threw Ball 1 to Jeromy Burnitz. Duncan then headed out and brought in Brian Eversgerd.
