Jonah Went to Nineveh

The following poem is written by my husband, James Arthur

He was saved under this message as a teenager many years ago.

He discusses this often and recently wrote this poem.

~ Jonah Went To Nineveh ~

Nineveh Saved

Now God spoke to Jonah, very long ago,

And said "arise, and to Nineveh go.

The city is great, but wicked and bad

Oh, if they would repent, I would be so glad.

But Jonah rose up, from God to flee,

Went down to Tarshish, there by the sea.

Bought himself a ticket, for a trip on the ship

Jonah thought he was far out of God's grip.

But the Lord sent out a great wind;

Against Jonah, the ship, and all the men.

The men rowed hard, trying not to sink

While Jonah was below, very fast asleep.

Then they awoke Jonah, and did cast a lot

Saying, "Why Jonah, against God did you plot?"

So they took up Jonah, and cast him into the sea

Oh Jonah, Oh Jonah, from God you cannot flea

Now God had prepared a mighty big fish

Now this fish thought Jonah was a tasty dish

But after three days and nights of this meal

Out came Jonah, with a purpose still.

Arise; Go to Nineveh, the Lord did say again

So Jonah went, and began to preach, against their sin.

From the king, down to the cattle, they all did fast

Because Jonah went, they did repent, and had revival at last.

If I ascend up into heaven,

thou art there: if I make my bed in hell,

behold, thou art there.

Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is come up before me.
But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD. But the LORD sent out a great wind into the sea, and there was a mighty tempest in the sea, so that the ship was like to be broken. -Jonah 1

View of Adad Gate at Nineveh from the North, outside city.

Reconstruction by Iraqi excavator was left unfinished, resulting in visible concrete reinforcing structure which was intended to be covered with mudbrick. Most of stone retaining wall is original ancient structure. Reconstructed Nergal Gate is visible in the distance at right.

Nineveh Adad Gate.

One of the fifteen gateways of ancient Nineveh.. A reconstruction was begun in the 1960s by Iraqis, but was not completed. The result is an uneasy mixture of concrete and eroding mudbrick, which nontheless does give one some idea of the original structure. The lower portions of the stone retaining wall are original. Fortunately, the excavator left some features unexcavated, allowing a view of the original Assyrian construction. The original brickwork of the outer vaulted passageway is well exposed. The actions of Nineveh's last defenders can be seen in the hastily built mudbrick construction which narrows the passageway from 4 m. to 2 m. Height of vault is about 5 m.

Nineveh. Nergal Gate. Reconstructed. This gateway may have been used for some ceremonial purpose, as it is the only known gate flanked by stone sculptures of winged bull-men (lamassu).

One of these sculptures can be seen in shadow in the photo. The reconstruction is conjectural, as the gate was excavated by Layard in the mid 19th century, and reconstructed in the mid 20th century. Vault is about 5 m. high.
