Story of The Wedding Ring The Wedding ring is thought to have origins in ancient Egypt where it was made of hemp or vine. The ring could be replaced when ever it wore out. The Romans later adopted the custom making them of iron. In the fifteenth century the British replaced the iron ring with Gold. The custom was later associated with the doctrine of the Trinity. In the ancient ritual of English marriages the ring was placed by the husband on the top of the thumb of the left hand, with the words " In the name of the Father", he then removed it to the forefinger saying "In the name of the Son" then to the middle finger adding "And of the Holy Ghost," then he left it as now on the fourth finger with the closing word "Amen".
