Station Configuration:

  • Hardware:
    • Davis Vantage Pro Wireless, sensors mounted 20ft above ground level in a residential neighborhood (some tree shielding of the anemometer).
    • All the software runs on an old, dedicated, HP Vectra Pentium-II (yes, 2) 166MHz. (what a great use for an ancient PC)
    • Since I am using cable modem, a power loss will cause my reporting to go down.
    • The sensor pack talks to the base unit on 915MHz...  I am also at the mercy of nearby RF interference. I have removed the standard antenna on the Davis console and replaced it with a SMA pigtail which allows me to use gain antennas that have resolved most of the interference issues that plagued me in 2007.
    • Rain indications during winter months are typically snow melting in the collector, or a freezing event interfering with the "tilting bucket" of the collector, or sometimes even rain.
    • email reports to the FOX25 Boston Weather Team (reports from this station are often mentioned on the 10 and 11 pm FOX25 News)
    • email reports to the WHDH Ch7 Boston WX Spotter List and to Todd Gross' list.
    • APRS reports to the www.findu.com APRS and WAPaprs server and the CWOP via cable-modem on Charter (using VWSaprs) instead of via VHF radio.
    • Reports to the WeatherUnderground (capability comes with VWS).
    • data available to users of Ambient Weather's "Weather Exchange" Desktop application. This station is KMAHOLDE1.
