What is Acoustic Athletes?
Acoustic Athletes is a volunteer musical outreach program providing guitar lessons for students attending East Middle School in Tullahoma, Tennessee who would not have an opportunity to take lessons or obtain a guitar without a volunteer's assistance.
Instruction and instruments are provided to students during an after-school program one hour each week. The classes follow the Tullahoma City Schools schedule and begin and end with each nine week term. Students may join or re-enroll in the class at the beginning of each nine weeks and lessons will be taught according to ability levels of participating students. Approximately 36 lessons will be taught during the school year. Participants will be able to check out guitars for practice after school daily in the East Middle School band room, and children dedicated to developing their skills will be rewarded with their own instrument after completing 25 lessons and a minimum of 25 hours of practice (practice log will be signed when instrument is checked out in band room). It is a "learn to earn" approach that rewards dedication and practice. Students are taught basic music theory, how to read score and tab, chords, rhythm techniques from various music genres, insturment tuning, proper care, and flat picking.
