Angel Wings Win Inaugural AL-SCIL Title
Havana (SP) -- The Angel Wings defeated the Corporate Raiders, 4 games to 2, to win the first ever AL-SCIL Championship. The A-Wings, champions of the Splinter Division, reached the finals after eliminating the wild-card Pacific Knights, 4 - 1.
The Wings were decided underdogs to the Clipper Division champion Raiders, who owned the league's best record during the regular season. Their plight looked even more desperate after losing the first two series games on the road in Havana. But solid starting pitching and great bullpen work, led by Series MVP John Wetteland, rallied the Wings. Wetteland notched saves in all four A-Wings victories, including two clutch shutout innings on enemy turf in Game 6.
"This is a great day for Angel Wings baseball," exulted a drenched Wetteland in the celebratory Wings clubhouse. "Our starting pitching was great throughout the series, especially in these last two games, and I was lucky enough to close them out. And our offense really gave us a spark when we needed it."
Only two runs separated the teams over the six game series. The powerful Wings offense, league leaders in homers during the regular season, bashed nine round-trippers in the six games, including two each from 1B Rafael Palmeiro and RF Matt Stairs. The Raiders, SCIL regular season leaders in runs scored, only managed four homers in the six game series.
Eccentric Wings owner R.T. "Puffy" Truesdell was beaming. "Nobody expected we'd be able to come back from two games down. It really says something about the character of our team, and how we play the game. Nobody quit in that dugout. It just shows you what kind of people we have on this club," said Truesdell, his voice breaking with emotion. Meanwhile, colorful and controversial Raiders owner Governor Desouza was clearly dejected in a silent Raiders locker room after the stunning loss. "No comment!" barked Desouza, who then muttered inaudibly as he stormed from the clubhouse.
