Object Type: Supernova
Remnant
Constellation: Cygnus
Magnitude:
Size: 3.5o x 2.3o
The Veil Nebula represents
the remnant of a supernova that occurred about 15,000 years ago. It is located at a
distance of approximately 2,500 light-years. The brighter portion on the left (east) is NGC 6992/5, and the portion on the right is NGC 6960, next to the
fourth-magnitude star 52 Cygni. The portion at top center is known as Pickering's
Triangular Wisp. Visually, the Veil is greatly enhanced by an O-III filter, and is a
spectacular sight in a large aperture telescope.
Instrument:
ST-10XME/Nikkor 180mm f/2.8 lens
F-ratio: f/4
Exposures: LRGB: L 8 x 2 minutes, binned 1x1; R 8 x 8 minutes, binned
1x1; G 8 x 2 minutes; B 8 x 2 minutes; GB binned 2x2
Date: September 5, 2004
Location: Landers, California, USA
Technical Notes: Individual exposures were sigma combined and the RGB image
assembled in Registar 1.0. Levels and Curves adjustments were made in Photoshop CS. An
Unsharp Mask of 2.0 pixels with a threshold of 0 was applied at 50% to the luminance
image. A Gaussian Blur of 2.0 pixels was applied to the RGB image. The original image was
resized for display on this page.
