This site is a list of all the
non-brass kits that produce an exact model of a prototype car. Requirements for
this list:
(1) kit comes out of the box an exact match, with no modification or
(2) dimensions of the kit are an exact match, either needs details added, or
details changed (change door or ends).
This is not a kit-bashing page (the model
magazines do a great job of explaining how to match the prototype if you have
to do that in order to create an exact model). If you would like to add to this
list, please contact the host.
Numbers in parenthesis indicate prototype road
numbers for a kit. For example,
(1600-1969) indicates that 370 road numbers are correct for the kit.

Modeling
the 1937 AAR by Tim O'Connor
Red Caboose acquired the IMWX tooling for the 1937 AAR design single door box
car with 4/5 ends and rounded (W-post) corners. Red Caboose produced a modified
version with square (S-post) corners. Both of these are completely
accurate for several series of SP box cars as long as you apply the appropriate
running boards, brake wheels, doors and trucks for each class (B-50-18, -19,
-20, -21, -23) SP purchased many thousands of these cars and they would be the
newest style box car on the SP until after WWII. The Red Caboose GS gondolas
are correct for late 40's SP. The Life-Like (Proto 2000) 50 foot single door
and double door box cars are pretty close to SP B-50-22 and A-50-14's
respectively, and those are good from the early 1940's and later. Red
Caboose and Proto 2000 have released many versions and special runs of the
above cars decorated for SP. Intermountain also has produced a 1937

Icing Platform (makes a correct PFE icing platform, Walthers
kit does not)
Modeling PFE cars by Tim
O'Connor
Intermountain did an R-40-10 reefer; you'll need a bunch of those for the
1940's. Red Caboose makes an R-30-12 and an R-30-9, you'll also want a bunch of
those. Tichy makes the R-40-2/R-40-4 and that's
another you'll want for the 1940's. (Build the Red Caboose kits first and then
match the roofs of the Tichy to the Red Caboose --
the Tichy kits have a small error in the roof
platforms.) You can use the Tichy underframe
with a Red Caboose R-30-9 to build an R-40-9 too.
