General Notes (Husband)

Neva was her nickname. Her husband was Barney Elster. They had a son Ralph who had a wife and a couple of kids, but their names elude me at the moment. Barney suffered from some debilitating problem with his legs. He had terrible pains in the legs and would drink when he got home from work at night to cut the pain. The drugs available today were not available at that time and so he drank. They lived between Redmond and Bend on an acreage. Ralph and his family lived on a similar acreage nearby. I met Ralph, their son, when I went to work for the Baker Feed Company in Redmond. I was about 20 or so, doing office work. Ralph was the guy out on the" feed floor" running things with a guy from Arkansas, named Buck Polton. Buck and his wife lived across the "street" (more of an alley in those days) . I can remember him grabbing a chicken by the head and spinning the body around until the body separated from the head, if you can imagine. That and the fact that he claimed his father was having sex as he neared 90. Isn't it wonderful what one can remember when yesterday is a faint glimmer.

It was through Ralph that I met Bernard. Dates elude me, of course, but eventually Bernard and I decided to "run away" and get married and so we did, in Walla Walla. - Minne LaVerne Imel
