General Notes (Husband)
Raymond Eugene Knighten married Wanda Arlita Matteson of Heppner, Oregon, September 1952. They had 3 children: Kenneth Lyle born April 14, 1953, Donald Ray, born October 6, 1955 and Teresa Kaye, born August 3, 1957. Kenneth never married anddied March 18, 1992. Raymond died in September of 1960. He was working for a farmer at Mayville, near Condon, Oregon. It was harvest time and the farmer had built a new grain elevator for storage of his wheat. It was all done, except for the roof, and after a rousing weekend, the contractor's crew didn't show up to put the last few pieces of tin on, and so in order to get it done so they could use it, Raymond said he would go up and help the contractor finish it. The scaffoldingropes broke, and they both plunged to their death at the bottom of the elevator. He was only 28, and left his widow and 3 small children. His little daughter was just 3 and his sons 5 and 7 years of ago. His wife, Wanda, remarried and she and her second husband had one son, Dennis. Dennis died in an auto accident about 3 years ago (1991), (Margaret thinks) and Kenneth, Raymond's oldest son died in March of 1992. I guess he had a lingering illness; Margaret says she rather losttrack of him after he left home, and he and his mother weren't close as she is to the other two children. Wanda's husband died last year (1993) after a long bout with cancer, so she had had a lot of strife to cope with, and part of it at a very tender age.
Newspaper article: WORKERS KILLED IN LONG FALL
Condon -- AP Two workmen fell 60 feet to their deaths from a grain elevator at the Orva Dyer ranch at Mayville, some eight miles south of here, Thursday.
Killed were Raymond Knighten, 28, Mayville, and Al Baska, who was in his early 60s of Hermiston.
The men were employees of Dyer and were putting siding on the elevator when they fell. End of article.
