Top 10 Accelerated Math Questions

1. What is Accelerated Math?

It is a computerized program that was created to help you practice math skills. The program quickly adjusts your assignments and the timing of your tests based on your homework (practice) results. In other words, if you can prove that you know something to the computer it will let you move on to the next assignment more quickly and with less work. Guessing only causes you to get more homework the next time.

2. How can the computer possibly teach me math?

The program does not teach you math. Everything you are given by the computer should already have been learned in this class or previous classes. However, we all know that sometime you don’t fully understand something, forget it, or your teacher did not have time to teach it to your class. The program will find those skills you should already know but don’t and give you practice with them.

3. How can I learn something without someone helping me?

You can’t! However, I am available for help after school, before school, during flex and many times during class. Also, don’t forget you have friends and family members to help you.

4. How often will I do Accelerated Math work?

You should complete two Practices OR a Practice and a Test per week. You must submit 2 TOPS reports per week. TOPS (The Opportunity to Praise Students) reports are generated each time you scan your Accelerated Math Card. In order to receive a TOPS report, you must complete a Practice or a Test then bubble and scan your Accelerated Math card.

5. How do I know if I am making progress?

Your TOPS report will tell you how many questions you answered correctly and give you feedback about individual questions you answered incorrectly. I will set a certain amount of objectives (typically 20) that you must prove to the computer that you have mastered by the end of the quarter. If you learn them all, you will earn an A+ for the Accelerated Math portion of your grade for the quarter. If you learn less you will earn less. Keep in mind that accuracy matters! If you scan poorly completed work you have to do MORE homework correctly before the computer tells me that you have learned the material. Guessing only slows you down.

6. Shouldn’t this be easy; the questions are multiple choice?

Don’t be fooled by the fact that the format is multiple-choice. The company that created the program tested each question. The incorrect choices are those that students came up with by making common mistakes. In other words, eliminating the possibilities does not work well as a strategy on Accelerated Math.

7. Do I get tested on this?

Yes. Once the computer program determines that you have fully learned something, it lets me know that you are ready to test. If you pass the test, you earn objectives. You need to “earn” 20 objectives by the end of the quarter. Check your progress on your TOPS report. Practices lead you to tests, which let you earn objectives.

8. How do I keep track of my materials?

Hole-punch your practice and test and keep it in the last section of your binder. Keep your scan cards in a VERY safe place- such as the clear pocket that covers your binder. Hole-punch your TOPS reports and keep them in the Accelerated Math section of your binder so that you are prepared to hand them in on Fridays. Recycle your old practice and test as soon as you have scanned and reviewed your work. If you have errors and you can’t figure out your mistakes, please see me for help.

9. What happens if I lose my scan card or it won’t work? What if I fill both sides?

If a card becomes bent, wrinkled, crinkled, or otherwise destroyed, it will not scan! You may ask for a new card if yours is ruined or lost. ONE new card will be provided to you. If this happens again, you will need to purchase a new card for $1. Handle your card with care! When your card is done, give it to me and I will give you a new one.

10. How do I fill out my card? When do I scan?

Write your name on your card. Write the form number of your practice or test in the spaces provided at the top of the card (write from left to right). Bubble in the corresponding bubble for each number. Bubble your answer for each question. You may scan during homeroom, flex (with a pass), or at the beginning or end of class.
