The
was founded to promote the sport of orienteering, develop suitable maps, and to help participants learn to become competent and confident at cross country navigation using a map and a compass. Though AOK's members typically live in northeastern New York State, many who have relocated elsewhere maintain their AOK membership and along with a connection to the Adirondack Park.
While our members compete in several types of orienteering events throughout the year, many individuals are especially enthusiastic about ski orienteering.
Ski orienteering (known as Ski-O, for short) is a sport where skiers use a detailed map to find locations in unfamiliar territory. Local meets are held throughout the state in the winter. Ski orienteers can ski shorter courses or more advanced courses, which require greater navigational skill and endurance. Individuals compete against others in their class (based on age and gender).
The Adirondack Orienteering Klub will host one 2010 Ski-O meet,
On SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 7th, at Point au Roche State Park (directions below)
(Starts will be permitted between 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM to enable everyone to finish in daylight) as a qualifier for the Empire State Games competition on Saturday, February 20th (1-5 PM), at Mount Van Hoevenberg. (See 2010 standings.)
If you plan to compete as a member of the Adirondack Orienteering Klub, don't forget to renew your membership for 2010 (see below).
Further information about Ski-Orienteering and competing in the Empire State Games can be found at http://empo.us.orienteering.org/ski-o/
