ALICE 19th * Yuu Watase

 Alice Seno seems like a normal girl in high school. She's a bit shy, she has a crush on a boy named Kyo, and she has a pretty older sister, Mayura, whois more popular than she is - especially with Kyo. Pretty normal stuff, until
one day when, walking down the street, Alice hears strange voices instructing her to save a rabbit from being run over by a car.  Alice's brave act almost costs her life, but the handsome Kyo saves her. Meanwhile, it seems the rabbit is no ordinary bunny, but a magical entity with great powers. Before she can figure out what's going on, the rabbit vanishes, only to reappear as a beam of light with a strange message just for Alice.
What can I say--Watase is a master. I don't think there's a single series she's done that I don't like. Alice 19th is fluffy stuff. You might be a little embarassed by the shoujo elements, but it's still an excellent series. The artwork is fantastic.

Alita is an old favorite of mine--it's depressing, violent, but fascinating. The series presents a seemingly hopeless world, but there's little glimpses of good here and there. I have to say that's what drew me in. It asks a lot of questions about humanity and meaning. You might not sleep well after reading this series, but you'll probably just be wondering about the ideas it presents.

HOT GIMMICK * Miki Aihara

When she learns that her sister Akane is late with her period, Hatsumi dresses up in disguise and goes to the drug store to get a pregnancy test. A guy tries to help her, but she is too afraid of being recognized and runs away. However, she does manage to get the test and is in the midst of happily returning home when she crashes into the last person she wants to see: Ryouki. To make things worse, she drops the test and he finds it. When Ryouki tells her he knows it's for her sister, she begs him not to tell his mother, Mrs. Tachibana. Ryouki agrees on one condition: that Hatsumi becomes his slave. In that moment, the guy from the drug store reappears, stopping Ryouki, and Hatsumi realizes it is Azusa, her childhood protector. He is back.

Addictive, funny, and infuriating.
You'll want to beat just about every character upside the head once or twice.
Terribly, terribly addictive, though!

A handsome youth by the name of Tenjo Utena transfers to the distinguished Ohtori Academy. But at Ohtori Academy she meets none other than her old lover, Kiryuu Touga, who wears the Mark of the Rose on his finger, which is the sign of a duellist. Because of her possessing the exact same ring, Utena is challenged by the student body vice president, Saionji Kyouichi, to a duel in the floating rose garden. The reason for this duel is none other than the acquisition of the "Rose Bride"'s body, for with it comes the "power to revolutionize the world."

Don't get too caught up searching for "deeper meaning." The scenes with Akio are hilarious. Don't ask me why. I don't know. They just...are. The box and disc are in great condition--I forced a few friends to watch it a few times. The WTF factor is very high on this one...but hey, that's Utena for you. If you haven't seen Utena or read the comics, you'll probably be lost, and might balk at some of the content (re: Angel Sanctuary). The manga might be a better starting point. Still...the movie is just downright trippy...and hysterical. You'll know what I mean.
