Overview, Location, Weather...

The photo to the left was taken on the road leading out to our point.  The tile roof of our house is seen at the far right of the picture nestled in the trees.  The property offers breathtaking views of the ocean and mountains.  In the distance is Old Port San Luis, and the breakwater that protects the bay.  This secluded home is located on the point of a protected south-facing ridge, above one of the best beaches in California.  The weather is known and cherished by the locals.  It is mostly clear and wind free, while other parts of the coast experience fog and wind.

This photo clearly shows what I mean about the house being on a point.  If you click on the photo, you can see the red tile roof of our house in the upper right corner (above the 18 hole Golf Course surrounding us).  The beach, (viewed 2 frames below) is to the right of this photo just past the bridge crossing the river.  The road at the bottom continues left for about two miles and dead ends at the Old Port Pier.  (below).

Here is the Old Port Pier.  It’s where you can moor or launch your sailboat, eat at one the fabulous restaurants, park your RV, buy fishing supplies and bob off the pier, or charter a fishing excursion.  If all this sounds too tiring, you can always just buy fresh fish (“right off the boat”) and cook it back at the Hacienda on the hill...  You’ll pass by the beach below the home, on your way back.  Don’t stop though or the fish will spoil…

Temperatures are mild almost all year.  Winters (which only last about two months…!) are rainy but very mild (typically in the 50’s – 60’s), Spring and Fall are unbelievably beautiful (60’s – 80’s), and summers are warm (80’s).  An occasional fog does come in on the hottest days of the Summer to cool off the area, but Avila Beach is usually the last to get foggy and the first to clear up along the entire Central Coast.  By the way, in case you couldn’t see it, the house is on the top of the ridge in the background.  Click the photo of Avila Beach to see a closer view of “The Happy Hacienda” as we affectionately call it.

Avila Beach is a quaint town located just 10 miles South of San Luis Obispo, Calif.  Until the turn of the last century, Avila’s roots were deep in fishing and whaling.  Over the years, it has transitioned from an active commercial fishing port to a recreational fishing mecca.  You can still purchase fresh fish on the Old Port Pier, and the fishing village charm is very much alive.  Nearby San Luis Obispo is the home to Cal Poly State University.  It is also an outlet for those who can’t stand paradise, and need to go to the modern Performing Arts Center, take on a college level sporting event, shop at Costco or Home Depot, etc.  If you’re not familiar with where Avila Beach is, click on the map above for a statewide view.

If you’re starting to think that you may be cloistered up on the hill your wrong.  You can fully enjoy all you see below, as there is even a wonderful nature trail from our property to the beach, river, and town below.  The gradual and meandering trail goes through the dedicated Blue Heron Wildlife Preserve directly between our property and ocean.  Fortunately, no one can ever build on it, and it is the only thing between our property, the ocean views, and the beach community below.  Walking to the beach through this wooded trail is a wonderful experience and good exercise.  There is another whole section on this web site dedicated just to Hiking, Golfing, Swimming, Exercising, Eating, and other activities, all within walking distance of the home!
