Upstairs Living & Dining Area

Once at the top of the stair landing you are immediately struck by the vaulted ceiling transitioning down into the large wood burning fireplace with hand carved stone surrounds.  Turning, you see the panoramic views of the ocean through the five large arched windows and the massive roof columns outside.  The open and arched windows, gives the home it’s 19th century look.  There are awesome views from every sitting position in this room.  Heavy rustic alder doors under thick plaster arches, separate the living room from the Master Bedroom.  These alder doors with oil rubbed bronze hardware are used in every interior doorway without exception.   All exterior windows and doors (except the alder front door and garage doors) are made by Anderson.  They are wood on the inside clad with a vinyl exterior.  Anderson was chosen as all hardware is stainless steel.  Perfect for the ocean environment.

The sill line is framed with reliefs which break up the walls and also acts as caps for the extensive columns around the house.  Beams over the columns give a sense of support for the openings.  The main design theme of the upstairs was to create a circular flow.  All utility spaces (powder room, closets, pantry spaces, etc) were designed into the center.  All living spaces were designed into the periphery.  This was done to capture the unbelievably beautiful views that are available from each room.  The living room, kitchen, dining, master bedroom, master bathroom, and even the folding counter of the laundry room, all have wonderful views attributable to the fact that this home is located on a knoll.

This photo is taken at the opposite side of the stair landing.  Behind you is the living room shown in the photos above.  The dining room is very spacious.  It is big enough to hold a banquet with any size table available.  Each place setting is given an awesome view through the surrounding windows.  The kitchen is to the left and shown below.  The hand hewn hickory pecan flooring, seen in this photo, is carried into the kitchen, laundry room, and hallway.  Thousands of hardwood square pegs were hand mortised into each plank and adds to the old world charm of this flooring.  The finish is absolutely bullet proof.

The kitchen has a three sided view.  The ocean is seen in this photo over the main balcony.  The kitchen sink is to the left and commands an eastern view over the knoll.  The view through this window goes to infinity and over several mountain ranges.  Behind me is another window above the granite counter top that looks out over the back patio and through an arched patio doorway.  You can actually see the ocean, sunrise, and sun set from this one spot where I am standing!  You have to go to the kitchen section of this web site to believe how beautiful these views are…

This photo captures the heart and sole of the Spanish Colonial theme I attempted to create in the home.  The chandelier is a focal point from several rooms, and from both inside and outside.  Custom wrought iron, most of which is hand forged on site, is continually being added to the home.  It’s a fun time in the development of this project…
