Beaucoup Blue

Beaucoup Blue is the Philadelphia based duo of David and Adrian Mowry. Father and son have been performing their music strongly rooted in the blues, up and down the eastern seaboard. Bridging many gaps in American music, their soulful traditional and contemporary style mesh into an innovative and authentic sound. Although blues is a staple in their repertoire, they also base their love in music from Folk, Soul, R&B, Jazz, Country, and Bluegrass. All these interests and influences come out in their original songwriting in a unique way.  A handsome range of instruments like six and twelve string guitars, slide guitar, Dobro and the two soulful voices blend together like only family members can, affecting audiences wherever they perform.

"This is what acoustic blues should sound like but so rarely do. Father and son, David and Adrian Mowry, deliver a surprisingly soulful performance. Their singing is tough and controlled and their guitar work is crisp and mournful." Tune-UP Magazine

"Throughout, their voices work superbly together, frequently attaining a mesmeric panache that must be thrilling to view in person, while their fret board and arranging skills are evident immediately. Beaucoup Blue is a versatile, imaginative team that has something to say and say it with an adventurous sense of personality from the bottom of their hearts." Singout Magazine

Laura Cortese

Singer, songwriter and fiddler, Laura Cortese lights up the stage with a radiating smile, dazzling musicianship and uninhibited delight.  She deftly strums, plucks and chops her fiddle behind her raw and rootsy voice. Forgoing the guitar and bass of the traditional rock band, Cortese tours nationally with indie rock/folk drummer Neil Cleary (Annie Hayden, The Essex Green, Erin McKeown). On her latest release, even the lost creek (February 2006), she couples the groove and polish of urban music with universal themes of the old world.

"Cortese's mix of modern and traditional styles creates an explosive sound that favors melody and rhythm over overtly technical performances. The momentum in songs like "Blow the Candle Out" propels the listener to a giddy plane where dancing is mandatory."  Denver Post

Finest Kind

Finest Kind's vocal arrangements are a creative tour de force. Tradition-based yet curiously modern, the trio's harmonies are an enchanting feast of opulent chords and ever changing textures. The trio's amazing vocal blend has been called "molecular bonding" by one reviewer: "Any closer," he says, "and they wouldn't be allowed to do it in public."  The variety of these individual musical backgrounds makes for one of the distinctions of a Finest Kind performance -- the exhilarating mix of repertoire. British, American, Irish, and Canadian traditional ballads keep company with gospel rousers, drinking songs, sea shanties, and pop oldies. The timeless works of the Carter Family, the Copper Family, Rudyard Kipling, and Hank Williams mingle with originals by Ian or Shelley. Unencumbered by allegiances to any one style, Finest Kind presents the hand-picked best of many genres, and keeps audiences wondering just what delight they'll hear next.

David Jacobs-Strain

David Jacobs-Strain emerged from the rain soaked mountains of Western Oregon storming the festival circuit as a dynamic blues prodigy. Like a diesel powerhouse of raw energy, David speeds across the landscape of the Country Blues to the earthbound grooves of the Mississippi Delta, with his driving slide guitar and fervent vocals. His passion stretches the limits of the blues with blazing guitar breakdowns that verge on psychedelia and highlight his intimate knowledge of the fretboard.

David's singing and steel-string guitar artistry (finger-picking and bottleneck-slide), receive critical praise, but what sets David apart is the moral conviction and emotional depth of his performance.  His music resonates with the old, reflecting his early preoccupation with acoustic country blues, and at the same time is decidedly contemporary, and innovative.

The Kennedys

Even after ten years, over a thousand gigs and 500,000 miles of touring as a married, music-making couple, singer-guitarists Pete and Maura Kennedy haven’t killed each other. The duo savors each instant in life and in each other’s company, and it shows in their music. The Kennedys have been charming audiences, record buyers and critics for the past decade with their exuberant mixture of folk, rock, country, pop and their own brand of secular gospel, a philosophical depth in their lyrics, and joyful, kinetic performances and recordings.

Half a Million Miles, The Kennedys’ eighth CD and Appleseed debut, presents ten sparkling roots-pop originals, plus two complementary covers, that are infused with Pete and Maura’s “live in the moment” outlook. They don’t mind looking back, as on the title track that opens the album, recounting their storybook first date, in which each traveled 500 miles to meet at mutual hero Buddy Holly’s grave in Lubbock, Texas. But they are most interested in looking around at what they see as an always-vibrant present tense.

Guy Mendilow Band

Through inventive arrangements and wildly creative instrumentation, the Guy Mendilow Band transports audiences on a vibrant journey to the places Mendilow has called home —from Israel and South Africa to Mexico, Brazil and the United States — as well as a few destinations that exist only in the group's imagination.

A bow, made with car tire wire, a branch and a gourd transforms into a full drum kit in Mendilow's hands, as he playfully re-invents age-old instruments. Alongside lush vocal harmonies, woodwinds and strings, the five members of the Guy Mendilow Band create intricate textures with berimbaus, percussion, jaw harps that would make beat-boxers' jaws drop, and Mendilow's award-winning overtone singing. Ancient Sephardic romanceros meld with pulsing beats from Northeastern Brazil and Mid-Eastern inflections. Audiences are captivated by the rare sounds drawn from the folk traditions with which Guy was raised, refreshed by the group's down-to-earth humour, and moved by musical tales that convey experiences shared despite cultural differences.

“Mendilow’s overtone [singing] was hauntingly beautiful and left the audience spellbound…this was an outstanding performance.” —Northeast Performer

While most identified with traditional American old-time music, Molsky’s influences range from the Appalachian soul of Tommy Jarrell to Delta blues; from the haunting modal strains of Irish music to the rhythmically nimble music of Eastern Europe.

Richard Shindell

Shindell’s songwriting is truly eclectic, ranging from lighthearted ballads and adulterous love songs, to dirges and diatribes that skillfully skewer politics, prejudice, war and religion. He has a unique ability to morph into the soul of the many and varied personalities he casts as narrators in certain songs--songs that are veritable novellas framed in haunting acoustic melodies, sometimes including cryptic, revelations through the eyes of a woman.  An expatriate New Yorker now living in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Richard Shindell is a meticulous craftsman of song whose five studio albums and one live recording have been revered by critics and fans alike. Innovative, original and occasionally spiritual, Shindell’s songs weave tales that interchangeably champion the downtrodden, exalt the disaffected or wax empathetic to those lost to society’s fringes. From his first record, Sparrow’s Point (1992) to the newest album Vuelta (2004), Shindell has demonstrated a penchant for songwriting at once passionate and profound. His songs are often slowly and painstakingly crafted until honed to perfection. Conversely, he is also capable of writing tunes that are simply clever and amusing.

This is what I do, and this is where I come from."  When asked about his career-long predilection for mixing in outside songs with his own material, Smither says, "This may sound a little self-important, maybe, but I like to hold these things up and say, 'These are the people I consider my peers, and my stuff stands up to this. Natalia Zukerman

The daughter of violinist/conductor Pinchas Zukerman and flutist/writer Eugenia Zukerman, Natalia grew up in Manhattan immersed in classical music. Her ears were tuned to perfect pitch, and the guitar dexterity, intricate sense of rhythm and meter evident in her own musicianship came naturally.challenges listeners to break out of patterns and rhythms that hold them back from reaching the truth.Hard work and long hours on the road are paying off for slide guitarist/singer Natalia Zukerman. Playing close to 200 solo shows a year is a good way to expand an audience, but possessing a playing style and singing voice as pure as Zukerman's sure doesn't hurt either.

".. insightful lyrics and impressive acoustic guitar work of Natalia Zukerman, who would land somewhere between Joni Mitchell and Ani DiFranco on the female singer-songwriter roster. It was a terrific performance for Zukerman...edgy and engaging..." The Ottawa Citizen
