Introduction: The selection of compact flash cards does make a difference in shooting speed for the DiMAGE 7/7i/ug/hi/5 for the larger file sizes (Raw and TIFF). Also, some cards don't work! See the list of cards that don't work below. Note, due to time limitations, I am only collecting timings for the D7 series of cameras (and soon the A1), and cards of 128MB or larger.. This page will collect RAW mode shooting speeds for user submitted flash cards and problem reports. There appear to be quite a few cards that don't work in the DiMAGE 7 and 7i, so watch out! If you have a card, even if it is already on the list, feel free to submit a timing. Microdrives too! If you have a card, time it and send in the results, you will help someone else out. The card speed DOES make a difference. The fastest card tested as of this writing could perform the test in under 11 seconds, the slowest took 47 seconds. Which card would you rather use?

The details: Unlike what I have been doing for the Nikon Coolpix cameras, I am not going to collect timings for JPEG mode shots. This is for several reasons, but mainly because the shot sizes on the D7/D7i vary so much in a way that is not really user controllable. Also, the D7/D7i has a large buffer, so JPEG save time does not really matter as much because you can shoot ahead for quite a few shots. However, for RAW mode, which may provide the best color for the D7/D7i, the card speed does make a difference, I observed a factor of 2 in just the small set of cards that I own. I chose RAW files because the size of RAW files is always the same, and because people are more likely to care about RAW files because there is no shoot ahead. Be sure to note the list of cards reported not to work (D7i problem reports are in the D7i section) |

A plea! Please, if you have a card, even if it is on this table already, and especially if you have a card that does not work, (even if it is already on the table), or if you have a card that works that is on the not-working list, PLEASE PLEASE send in a timing or report. It will just take a minute to do, and it will help other people a lot. Even if you posted the problem on a forum, I don't and can't read all messages, and I don't want to "lift" someone's report from another forum and post it here and run the risk of duplicating it or making someone mad or duplicating reports by accident. You have to report it to me with an e-mail. If you send in a report, I will just use your first name and initial, not your full name. Don't worry, I will not put your e-mail address on there, or your full name, just your last initial. (a number of people have been asking this)

How to time your cards: Don't have a stopwatch? Use this link! * Set the camera for RAW mode. * Format your card to empty it. It is important that there be no files on the card to slow down the test. Don't forget to save any shots that you want first ;) * Use a stopwatch if possible. Make a note in your submission if you used something less accurate. Timing to the nearest second is probably good enough. * Take one picture on the card before you start timing. This is so that the camera creates the folders that it needs. You can start timing with the second picture. * Point the camera at something fairly bright so that there will not be a very long shutter speed. * Start the watch when the Red save light comes on by the compact flash door. Stop it when it goes off. At these times, timing to the nearest second is probably OK. Only time the Red LED being on, not from when you press the shutter. Don't have a stopwatch? Use this link! * Send in your timing! Please include what camera this timing is for, I get timings for other cameras also. email me a timing! Please note the brand of the card and any other info that might be useful, such as the "X" rating for the Lexar cards or cards that are type II form factor. * As noted below, you must now submit your firmware version for D7 and D7i too! * I am no longer collecting timings for cards less than 128MB since almost all interest is in the larger cards due to the lower prices these days. |
|||||||||
|
* Firmware 121 has been released for the D7, and most cards are faster with it. A few cards that used to marginally work with the 021 firmware do not work with 121. Please report your firmware version with your timings that you send so I can keep everything straight. If you submitted a timing before, but want to submit a timing with the new firmware, go ahead, just tell me. To see your firmware version, put the camera in "Setup" mode with the dial and press the scene mode button (the one by the top LCD).

(2) This card had a problem in the D7 and was returned. The card may have been bad or may not be fully compatible with the D7. (3) replacement for card (2) (4) One of the PQI cards showed once a strange behaviour, all files on the card deleted in the USB CF reader, then not used in the camera for 2 days, in the D7 it showed 000 i.e. card full, could not format in the camera, returned to the CF reader, only cryptic signs appeared in the directory listing, formatted in the CF reader and again formatted in the camera, now it runs fine. (5) Stephen reports that this card eventually died. See below. (6) This is the fastest card tested to date. Myron double checked this, and the value is an average of 3 timings. This may represent the lower limit of what the D7 can do. (7) Phillip starting having trouble with these cards after the 121 firmware update. See below.

Same problem in review mode after reviewing a few pictures. It seems to be a "temperature" problem because the CF card is very hot when it crashes and, when I take 5 pictures then switch the 7i off and then take again 5 pictures and so on the card works fine...Two friends had the same problem with Lexar (Pro 24x 256 MB) cards and their Dimage 7i too.
