Basic information about the breed

The Berger Picard (pronounced BARE-zhay pee-CAR) or Picardy Shepherd is a medium sized rustic French herding dog. Their scruffy appearance fools many people into thinking they are a mutt or a mixed breed that is new. The Picard is believed to have Celtic roots and has been around for a long time.

Size: 50-70 lbs with a thin, muscular build

Coat: Scruffy and rough (not too wirey) 2-2 1/2 inches long in colors of fawn (tan) shades and dark gray brindles (varigated coat)

Life Expectancy: 12- 14 years

Claim to Fame: Several Picards were used as the title character in the move "Because of Winn Dixie" because of their scruffy look and because they weren't commonly recognized.
