FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Legislature Considering Changes to NH Special Education Statutes:

Let Your Voice Be Heard!

Concord, NH – June 12, 2006.  Don’t miss this important opportunity to influence state legislation.  NH’s special education statutes are now being reviewed to determine what changes are needed. The Disabilities Rights Center (DRC), the Parent Information Center (PIC), and the NH Department of Education are hosting 2 public forums to enable NH families, school personnel and members of the public to address issues of concern, what is working and what could be improved in special education on the local or state level.

The first forum will be held on June 14th, from 3:30-5:00pm & 6-7:30pm at the Pease Library, 1 Russell Street, Plymouth, NH.  The second forum will be held on June 15th, from 3:30-5:00pm & 6-7:30pm at the Merrimack High School Little Theatre, 38 McElwain Street, Merrimack, NH.  You may attend one or more of these four public input options.

Key issues include:

·        Right of children with disabilities to a free appropriate public education in the least restrictive environment

·        Special education funding

·        Role of the NH Department of Education

·        Dispute resolution options for families and school districts

·        Interagency collaboration and coordination

·        Serving children with low-incidence disabilities (i.e. blind or deaf) or children with intense needs (i.e. autism, multiple disabilities or emotional disturbance)

·        Who pays when children with disabilities are placed by the court or DCYF

·        Rights of children with disabilities who are being home-schooled or placed in charter or alternative schools by their parents
