Alternatives to public school: non-public schools, charter schools, school choice
last updated 12/03/08 at 3:00 PM
In the state of NH, home education is an alternative to compulsory
attendance at a public school. There are other alternatives:
- Receipt of a diploma from the child's resident district
- Receipt of a GED
- Completion of a home education program at the high school level
- Enrollment in a non-public school
- Attendance at a charter school
- Alternative learning program (after age 16)
- Enrollment in a post-secondary institution
- Under certain conditions a child may be
excused from attendance
- It is possible that
expulsion of a student from a public school
may release a parent from the compulsory attendance obligation.
Parents who homeschool often choose other alternatives at some point in their children's education.
The conditions under which institutions that provide these other alternatives operate may also influence
how they interact with homeschoolers to provide services.
