Ambergris Caye is the largest
of almost 1000 Cayes of the northern waters of Belize, measuring 25 miles in
length. It is located just 35 miles northeast of Belize City
and can be reached by a 20 minute plane ride or an hour and a half boat
ride.
On the east side of Ambergris Caye lies the
Belize Barrier Reef. At the far north portion of Ambergris Caye lies what is
called "Mexico Rocks" where the reef nearly touches the shore of the
island.
San Pedro is the major settlement on the
island and is located on the southern portion of the island. The town itself
measures about a mile in length and is only a few blocks wide. Between
4000-7000 locals live on the island.
There are three main streets: Front St., Middle St., and Back St.
The main mode of transportation is golf carts, however there are some vehicles on
the island.
The streets are filled with shops,
galleries, local resturants, dive shops, and hotels.
