Sarteneja is a
fishing village located on the tip of the Sarteneja peninsula of the Corozal
District. The Corozal District is the most northern portion of Belize and
comprises only about 8% of Belize.
Sarteneja is a
Mayan word that translates into "water in the rock." This seaside village is
situated on Mayan ruins and there are many ancient Mayan
wells.
Sarteneja is famous for its fishing and shipbuilding.
The Shipstern
Nature Reserve is located just 3 miles south of Sarteneja. The Nature Reserve
is 22,000 acres of costal savannah, hiking trails, rare trees, wildlife, and
hundreds of different butterfly species.
