Do not stand at my grave and weep!
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am a diamond glint on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am a gentle Autumn's rain,
When you awaken in the morning's
hush
I am the swift uplifting rush,
of quiet birds in circled
flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at
night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there. I did not die.
In Loving Memory Of My Parents and Grandparents

Benjamin Nutfield Russell, born in Shoreham, County of Kent, England, learned the Carpenters trade before emigrating to the United States. He became part of the westward movement. The lure of free land and new opportunities seemed to be the drawing factor. Althought the railroad's were making great strides toward the new frontier, they had not yet reached Colorado. Their mode of transportation was the covered wagon and a new home was generally a tent house.
Benjamin's sons, James and Lenord traveled west with their father while Benjamin W. stayed in Kentucky and started a family of his own.
Skirmishs with the Indians were frequent and Benjamin experienced many encounters. In those early days the Indian scouts would spy on the leading trails from the East and report back to their chief. If it seemed advisable, they would make raids on the emigrant trains, massacre the people, burn the wagons and take all their stock and provisions. They would hide along Sand Creek or Clay Creek for a month or so until the terrible deed had blown over, then they would start the same tactics all over again. The cycle occurred frequently through this part of the west of many years.
In 1864, Benjamin was one of the citizens that mobilized at Fort Lyon with Colonel Chivington and his soldiers. Scouts were sent out to locate the band of Indians on Sand Creek and report back. Chivington and his men made a forced march of part of a day and a night before attacking. The Indians were camped under a high bank at a turn in the creek. There was a gap in the bank through which the soldiers marched. At dawn they struck, killing all the Indians even the papooses. There were about 600 Indians in camp, some got away.
Benjamin and John Bush became partners in a contract for building the Kansas Pacific railroad. They completed it to Kit Carson in 1870 when funds ran out and the partnership was dissolved.
There were a few adobe houses at Kit Carson, but it was mostly a tent city located about three miles from the present side on the banks of Sand Creek. As the terminus of the railroad and the big shipping point for that territory it was a flourishing town, larger than the present one, (1936). The population of eighteen hundred and fifty men and thirty women was a ratio of sixty to one. Saloons, gambling houses, and dance halls prevailed, and a Cheyenne Indian village was located just south. Custer and his soldiers were stationed there numbering three companies of U.S. Cavalry, and more were sent because of the Indian uproar. Cowboys, bull whackers, soldiers, Indians, Mexicans and criminals from all over the world made up the town's inhabitants. Acts of violence were common and part of life on the new frontier. In May 1870, forty-six men were killed by the Indians while working on the railroad and late the same month, Indians tore down the railroad water tank. Milton H. Straight was hung from the railroad bridge at Kit Carson, July 30, 1870, by a mob of seventy five men.
During one of these Indian uprisings, Benjamin ordered his railroad workmen to clean and oil all guns in camp and be prepared for the worst. One morning he was going down on the big Sandy to cut grade stakes. Katie, his wife, spoke to him about a dream she had the night before and asked him to wait until after lunch. While they were at lunch the men yelled 'Indians'. Sure enough it was a raid. The Indians circled the camp and began attacking but when the men went out defending the camp with their guns, the Indians rode off. The men mounted their horses and followed the raiders to the surveyor's cook camp about three-fourths of a mile away. The Indians were trying to get the cook. When the men arrived he was fighting them off with a butcher knife through the door of his tent. After setting fire to the cook hut, the Indians made their get-a-way. The cook, known as 'Red' Kelley, came to meet the men with his hair standing straight up on his head. He though he was a goner.
Another time when the Indians were on the warpath a shoemaker stopped at camp on his way to Denver. He stayed a few days before heading out. Benjamin wanted him to stay until the Indians had settled down for fear that he would be attacked but he didn't listen and left camp. Later, he along with a group of Mexicans, were found massacred and scalped. Benjamin took an arrow from one of the Mexicans and kept it for several years. Dr. Richardson of Lyons, Kansas borrowed it for an exhibition and never returned it.
Katie had the first white child in that part of the territory, July 28, 1870. They named the new arrival, Edward Nutfield Russell. Later, Ed would ride the range for several large Ranches in Kansas and Colorado, seek gold in the mountains and finally settle at Lamar, Colorado where he owned and operated 'Ed Russell's Blacksmith Shop'.
After Benjamin and John Bush dissolved their partnership, the Russell's with their your baby traveled on the Kansas Pacific as far as Ellsworth, Kansas and crossed into Rice County. They homesteaded a preemptive claim in Atlanta Township just 30 miles from where William Cody homesteaded. They became good friends during those years in Kansas and Colorado and while Mr. Cody traveled with his wild west show in later years, he would frequently stop in Pueblo to visit Benjamin's widow, Katie.
The Indians became more subdue and would trade up and down Cow and Jarvis Creeks, in Rice County. Katie would trade them cornmeal and groceries for wild turkeys and good buffalo robes. They had lots of buffalo hides in those days, Benjamin alway had one or two buffalo hanging in the meat room in winter. All other supplies were gotten from Ellsworth sixty miles away.
There was an occasional dance to attend. The top box would be placed on the wagon and it would be filled half full of hay and covered with four or five big bufalo robes. The horses would be hitched and the drive would be fifteen or twenty miles to the dance.
Lenord Cross Russell was written up in Muscott's History of Rice County, Kansas as being one of the first five white men to settle in that county, November 1871. It is claimed by members of the family that Benjamin, his father, was also one of the first white men in the county.
After eight years of struggling with wheat farming, fighting the grasshoppers of '75, drought and other misfortunes, the Russell's sold out to William Page and started back to Colorado by covered wagon. They stayed at Dodge City for about two months before pushing on. Dodge City, at that time and for some years, was the toughest town in the United States. Killings were said to average one per day. In 1886, the cattle trail was changed and no longer ran through Dodge City. The town was 'cleaned up' and the gambleres, crooks and bad men who had made it their headquarters were scattered all through the southwest along the border.
Benjamin and Katie had six children during this time. Most of them settled in Pueblo, with the exception of Edward who lived in Lamar. Little is known of Benjmain's older sons: James Henry, and Benjamin W. after the death of their father in 1887. Lenord stayed at Lyons, Kansas until about 1900 and then moved away.
The Russell's went on to Pueblo late in 1879, finding very little settlement between Dodge City and Pueblo. A company of soldiers were encamped at old Granada but very little else except a supply store and railroad siding could be found. Rocky Ford was only a crossing at the river and Pueblo was very small. From Pueblo they went to Chaffee City in Chaffee County, now Monarch, where Benjamin engaged in the mining business. His son, Bejamin W. had joined the family by this time with his wife and son. He and Lenord were the town Blacksmiths. Chaffee was a newly organized city in 1880, a booming mining town supporting 3,000 people. It was located at the end of the Monarch branch of the Denver and Rio Grand railroad. Silver and gold had become the territory's main source of wealth and the boy's dipped their hand into this prospecting ring.
This was a relatively short lived episode. Benjamin and Katie along with his sons Lenord and James and families went to Trinidad and from there drove a mule and oxen team to Garden City, Kansas. They stayed at Garden City for seven years and build up a feed and grain business and the children went to school. Lenord went back to Lyons, Kansas. Edward worked on the range for the Circle Cross and ZX Ranches near Ulysses and Benjamin built houses.
In the latter part of the '80s the cattlemen in this part of the country were ruined by the blizzards. During December of '85 and '87 and in the spring of '86. These were terrible blizzards, which were more like arctic storms. The air filled with fine white flour and you couldn't see your hand in front of your face. The country was thinly settled then, most people lived near the river in sod houses, dugouts and shacks. In this territory there were probably a hundred people frozen to death. Some were found lying a hundred yards from their houses and others even closer.
While in Ulysses, Edward became involved in the county seat fight there. Word was spread that the ballot boxes were going to be taken. About a hundred men were made deputy sheriffs including Ed. Barricades were thrown up across the streets, consisting of 2 by 12's set edgeways. Deputies were stationed behind them to protect the ballot box and other deputies including Ed were stationed with their rifles in the voting places. After the voting was over the boxes were taken to the First National Bank for counting and locked up in the vault.
Late in 1887, Benjamin and his sons, started out to take a herd of 3,000 sheep and 50 head of cattle from Garden City to Carrizo Springs. They were caught in a storm near Lamar and the cattle stampeded. They chased them as far as Sand Creek before turning them. As a result of the exposure Benjamin became ill and died at West Las Animas. He was buried in the Las Animas Cemetery. With word of her husband's death, Katie traveled to Las Animas and disposed of the stock. James Henry, Administered his fathers Estate and after it's settlement Katie returned to Garden City with her sons.
Katie sold the feed and grain store and traveled to Pueblo in 1891. She and the children lived in a tent very near the Fountain River where the Fountain School now stands. She raised the children by taking in laundry that she scrubbed on a wash board. The children found jobs as they grew up, the boys at the Standard Fire and Brick Co., and the girl at Troy Laundry.
Katie died in 1926 in Pueblo and was buried in Roselawn Cemetery where many old pioneers are resting. How appropriate that she rest beside others who had weathered the early west.
