My Sabre suffered from a common problem... The pro-link suspension creaked and groaned whenever I compressed and released the rear suspension. Honda used bronze bushings in early Sabres and eventually switched to small needle bearings in 1985 but the 82-84 models are prone to problems with the bearings drying out and seizing. The solution is to disassemble, grease, and reassemble every couple of years.

I figured that as long as I was going to take this stuff apart, I might as well put grease fittings in the linkages so I wouldn't have to go through this tedious procedure again. Here's some pictures of my grease-fitting modification.

Note that the top grease fitting on the "dog-bone" link has a 90 degree fitting. Also note the fittings are on opposite sides of the link at either end so they can be reached easily without removing parts from the bike.

The "dog-bone" links appear to be symmetrical but I carefully marked them when removing so I got them back in in the same orientation when reassembling. The other linkages definitely only fit one way so you must keep track of how things come apart.

I figured, since I took off the passenger-peg brackets anyway, I'd put a grease fitting on the rear brake pivot as well.

Below are schematic drawings of the Pro-link and parts lists for the 84-85 VF700 Sabre.
