ATTENTION: All
Georges Pond Property Owners
The Georges Pond
Property
Owners’ Association (GPPOA) is appealing to all residents and visitors
on the
pond to be aware of the loons on the pond and to provide a safe haven
for
them..
As of the current
date we
believe there are two pairs of nesting loons here on the pond. There may be one nest behind the large
island on the eastern shore and the other nest is for sure on the small
island
at the end closest to the outlet.
Loons lay eggs
which are
hatched around Memorial Day. If those
eggs fail to produce a baby they will nest once more and those eggs
will hatch
out around July 4th. It is
critically important that the nests not be disturbed prior to and just
after
those dates. Any person remotely close
to the nests will frighten the loons away.
Therefore, we are urging everyone to stay well away from the
nest(s)
from mid-May to mid July. The GPPOA has
sponsored the building of a floating nesting platform for the loons to
use but
it will take some time, perhaps even years, before the loons will
become
accustomed to the presence of this platform and use it.
In the meantime, we know that all pond
residents want to provide an environment in which the loons feel safe
to nest.
We would
appreciate your
posting this notice somewhere in your home so that residents, guests and renters may
see it. Just this week a group on the
small island
told us that they had no idea the loons were nesting there and had they
known
they would have stayed away. They
thanked us for letting them know.
Protecting the
loons benefits
all of us. We appreciate your help with
these efforts.
