Like an Echo (Revisited)
By Jen Zeni
If I could hear his voice
Like an echo in a hollow redwood tree
I would know all about the street
We played basketball
And soccer in
Before I was tall enough to get onto my bed
Without jumping
If I could see his eye
Deep dark blue
Like the walls of his bedroom
Covered in posters of cars
And airplanes
Or like an expensive piece of sapphire
Glinting in the graduation ring on his finger
That still brought a smile to his face when he looked at it
And remembered the friends
Rushing out of the stands and tackling him
To steal the orange hat he always wore
If I could put him on the beach
With his best friend splashing water on him
I would put a girl on his arm
With long blond hair
That blows behind her in the wind
And smells like raspberries and soap
And a couple more watching him
Fall laughing shoulder deep into the water
From the shore
If I could give him a car
I would give him a pick-up
An old well worn one
With several stickers
For bands and radio stations
And protesting building tunnels
On the back
I'd have him drive it
With the windows down
Back Home!
