My Take on Napster
Chas Andres
Yet again the US Govenment steps in, and tries to close Pandora's box. The power that Napster gave us was much too great to survive in it's current form long, however, and the RIAA did have a valid argument for it's case. The ability to download any song you would ever want, for free, at the click of a button is such a revolutionary idea, that there was nothing that can be done to stop it. On behalf of the musicians who loathe Napster, I have to say that the RIAA and Government did the right thing. However, it was too little too late, and now there is nothing they can do. Filter Napster? No problem. Misspell the words to the song, get it anyway. That too hard? Just get Macigator, and you're back in businsess. Sick of the interface? Just go to gnutella, or rapigator, or any other alternative open nap server. That too hard? what, did you expect the greatest program since the web browser to be free and easy to use forever? Someone wants a few bucks, and the people with the most right to try are the Musicians themselves. From what we've seen, they've done their best to try and capitolize on it. Whatever. Let them try. They'll come out with some knock-off Napster that's 10.00 a month, and they'll get their money, but I won't use it. A technology that vaulable should be free for the people to use, and I'm going to support the free versions. After all, without pirates, VCR's would never have been invented.
