Every Night

By Kati Frazier

Every night

she tells herself

it isn't true.

As the sound, nearly silent

deafens her.

Turns her heart to blue.

In the dark

she tries so hard

not to see

the shadowed back. Come closer.

"Calm down, it's only me"

Every time

she makes no sound.

Pretends to be asleep.

Her heart pounds

for fear

of the secret she will keep.

Through the dark

she feels him,

but tries not to know.

His intentions form a heart of black.

She waits, she bleeds.

The air is grim.

Once he's done,

he leaves her

with just one sound.

No word.

Just

the locking of her door.

When he is gon,e

she pretends

that she isn't crying.

She knows her pain ends

only

with her dying.
