Sleep

By Kati Frazier

She told me

it was like

falling asleep.

They told her "Head home!

We dont want your kind."

she had no choice but to roam.

Hate left her blind

She told me

it was like

falling asleep.

They put nooses in her locker.

Threats writtin in blood red.

She feared they'd destroy her

that they wanted her dead.

She told me

it was like

falling asleep.

They said, "Where's your God now?

your Buddha, Zeus, whatever . . .

Where'd your help go?"

The girl had no savior.

She told me

it was like

falling asleep.

She hid all her scars

to show she wasn't weak.

Salvation was too far.

She had no hope to seek.

She told me

it was like

falling asleep.

The bruises were nearly fatal.

She coughed up blood.

They burned 'bitch' across her navel.

The girl stoppped eating food.

She told me

it was like

falling asleep

They warned her not to come again

but she had no choice.

Confidence she couldn't feign

fear took her voice.

She told me

it was like

falling asleep.

They held her down.

One had a knife.

To pain she was bound.

She feared for her life.

She told me

it was like

falling asleep.

She escaped to the river,

there were jagged rocks below.

The idea mesmerized her

she knew where to go.

She told me

it was like

falling asleep

She was victim to sin.

She had nothing to keep.

So she dove in

and breathed the water deep.

She told me

it was like

falling asleep.

Back Home!
