Once you've found a name for yourself you'll probably want to register it so that only you can use it. When you chat online people get to know you as a certain name and you don't want someone else 'impersonating' you online. To register a name you will need to think of a password (and remember it), then use the following command (this command is best done in the status window so if you mistype it, the password you've decided on won't be revealed to anyone else):
Replace the word 'password' with your choice of password and replace the word 'email' with an email address, it doesn't have to be a real one if you prefer it not to be.
If you want to stop anyone using your name if they don't know the password then you'll need to 'protect' your name. Once you've registered it use the following command:
This will tell Nickserv to demand a password whenever that name is used (even by you), if the password isn't entered within a set amount of time, Nickserv will remove that name from the person and change them to a 'Guest' nick.
Once your nick is registered you'll need to use your password to tell Nickserv that you own that nick and have the right to use it. The command is:
Again, since you're typing your password in, it's best to type this command into the status window so no one else can see your password. You will need to identify whenever you come online using that nick, and often you will need to if you want to change the options for that nick (like setting nickname protection on).
If you get disconnected from IRC unexpectedly (often dial-up ISPs have a time limit which does it) then sometimes your 'presence' (i.e. your name in a channel) remains as a 'ghost'. It looks like you're still there but actually you're not. If you come back online immediately you won't be able to have your name back because the ghost has it, you need to 'Ghostkick' your nick so you can have it back. The command (again, type it in the status window) is:
Remember to change the word 'nick' with your registered nickname.
If you've forgotten to Identify your nick and Nickserv has changed you to a 'Guest' nick you won't be able to switch back straight away as Nickserv will hold the nick with an 'enforcer'. You can either wait until the enforcer releases the nick or you can use the following command to tell Nickserv to release the name so you can switch back straight away:
This is virtually the same as the Ghost command, the only difference is that this is the one you use if an enforcer is sitting on the name rather than anyone else.
To get a full list of Nickserv functions and how to use them type:
You can get further information on the specific commands by using:
Where 'command' is the function you want to know about, e.g. /nickserv help register will give you detailed help on that particular command.
