On entering a chatroom there are a number of things that a new user may need to know about general conduct. In channels many people will observe forms of address such as 'Sir' or 'Madam', 'Mistress' and 'Master', and will expect new people to follow the example of others in that channel. It pays when entering a channel to check for any rules that may exist as they may also contain instructions for how to conduct oneself in that particular channel.
Most users observe a practise of general courtesy to each other, and room Operators (moderators or hosts) enforce both the rules and the general attitude in the room that they control. And 'control' is what they do - upset a room Operator (or Op) and they can kick you out of the channel, ban you from it for a short time or even ban you from that channel forever if they consider your conduct contrary to the principles of their channel.
So treat people as you would like to be treated yourself and you'll get on well with most users. And in any channel if you have any questions, ask the channel Operators who should be able to help in most cases.
On IRC there are a number of common abbreviations that are used in general chat that are often confusing to people new to chatrooms. Although chatroom users may often explain these terms, here we will supply them so that new users can be fully prepared.
A few are merely shortened forms of expressions, such as the following:
