Using IRC

Getting a Name

Probably the first thing you will need to do, especially if you are using java to chat with, is to get yourself a name. The command to do this is very simple:

/nick newname

If you are asked for a password and you're the one who registered the name then you will need to 'Identify' to Nickserv (the server that controls the registered names). If you didn't register the name then you will need to choose another name and use the /nick newname command again.

Getting in a Room

Now that you're online and have a name you'll probably want to get into a channel (sometimes called channels, sometimes rooms but it's the same thing; we just like to confuse you). The command to join a room is:

/join #channelname

Once you're in, a new window should open up showing you the chat on the left hand side and the list of other people in that room on the right.

Getting Back Out of a Room

You can use the command:

/part #channelname

But the easiest way is to click on the 'Close Window' X in the top right hand corner of the channel window. Just be careful to click on the channel X, not the one right at the top which will exit you from your chat program entirely. Don't worry if you do get the wrong one from time to time; everyone does it occasionally, you won't be the first or the last so just reconnect.

Finding a Room

If you want to see a list of all the rooms that are currently active (have people in them) then the command you need is:

/list

This will bring up a window with a list of rooms, the number of people currently in there and the topic.

Whispering/PMs

Again, lots of names for the same thing. A whisper or PM (private message) is when you speak to someone in a separate chat window that only the two of you can see. The easiest way to PM someone is to double click on their name in the channel window. This will open up a PM window where you can speak privately with that person. It's good manners to ask someone in the channel before you PM them.

If someone wants to PM you, then on most chat programs a new window will appear (usually hidden but the name of the person PMing you will appear on the line of window 'tabs', just click on it to bring it to the front). In java the person's PM will usually appear in the main channel window with a * next to it, to open it into a new window, double click on their name (as if you were initiating the PM).

If you want to send a private message to someone without opening a window, or you need to PM someone who's not in the room with you then use the command:

/msg nick message

Replace 'nick' with the name of the person you want to speak to (remember to make sure it's exact, including any odd characters they may have as part of their nick) and 'message' with the message you want to send them (it can be more than one word, just press enter when you're done).

Switching Servers

Like most computer systems, the chat servers on bondage.com aren't always completely reliable (can you detect a hint of understatement there?), occasionally they're subject to a phenomenon called netsplitting. This is when one or more of the connected servers stops being connected. Usually if this is happening the other people who are online will notice and advise others to change servers to one that's working better than the others. If you're advised to switch servers the command you will need to use (in the status window) is:

/server irc#.bondage.com

Replace the # with the number of the server that you've been advised to switch to, e.g irc3.bondage.com. This will disconnect you from IRC and reconnect you using the server you've specified.

Finding People

If you're looking for someone specific then use a whois command to find them:

/whois nick

Remember that 'nick' needs to be the exact nick of the person.

If they're not online or you just want more information about them (like when they were last online) use this command:

/nickserv info nick
