Tags will be out by the end of the month. There is even a chance that those hunters that got their choices in after the deadline will also receive a tag. Ever year I hear of a glitch in the DNR website when it come time to apply for the spring season. They get so flooded with requests that the system can't handle it and crashes. I was told by a DNR employee that they would still except applications postmaked as late as December 12th. This is the third year in a row that they've had this problem. Remember that next year when you realize too late that your application is due.

As some of you might know I've reduced the number of clients the past three years to provide a better quality hunt. Last year we killed 12 out of 13 birds. This year will be no exception. I will possibly be taking on 2 new clients which will bring me back up to 6. This years hatch was great in some spots, terrible in others. Late spring flooding in the Pine Island area caused irregular hatchings among some hens.  What does this mean? Nothing for this year. There will still be a healthy population of 2-3 year old birds running around. The jake population however will take a very noticeable hit. I expect a good number of mature toms taken this year, but that should change for the spring 2006 hunt. With fewer jakes repopulating the lowlands there will be fewer mature birds in that area. If you've hunted the bluffs before, nothing should change. Flooding didn't effect that area as harshly as the lower regions.

Good luck on the tags, and look forward to this spring!
