POPPIES & SEA LAVENDER

This series arises from a serendipitous event in June 2001. On the way to another photo shoot, I saw two massive fields of red and purple flowers that caught my eye ... and heart. These two colors do something to me.
The red flowers were clearly poppies, but the identity of the purple took some detective work. Gardening friends settled on statice, whose alternate name of sea lavender seemed more lyrical.
These images excite me not only for their special colors and intrinsic beauty but also for being abstract and yet representational. Some of my favorite artists--Avery, Diebenkorn, O'Keeffe, Kahn--create such interesting, dual-level work. This series is an homage to these painters.
