At the time of the Tet offensive I was residing in a USAF BOQ on Vo di Nguy street.  If you exited TSN around by the golf course, you came to the civilian area and Vo di Nguy street.  (I think the street name has been changed since 1975).  I do not think this BOQ was even nicknamed (like the Brinks, etc).  I knew it only by the street name and address number (the number I have forgotten).  The Vet Admin does not think it even existed .. I know it did because I lived there.

There were two guys there who ran the Red Cross office on Tan Son Nhut ....

Just trying to establish that the place existed ... after Tet we were all moved on base.

Thank God for you guys during Tet.

Ivan Barton

FROM THE WEB MASTER:   Vo di Nguy street directions:

1. From Tan Son Nhut Main Gate, go straight out the gate. Do not turn left or right. Go three blocks. It runs into Vo Di Nguy street. Vo Di Nguy street runs North and South.
2. Vo Di Nguy street runs past the Golf Course.
3. Vo Di Nguy street runs over some railroad tracks.
4. Vo Di Nguy street then becomes Hai BaTrung street.

Comments:  Hello fellow veterans, I served at Tan Son Nhut AB, in Saigon, Vietnam from October 1967 to November 1968.

I was in the 6250th Support Squadron, at the Tan Son Nhut AB.  I worked at the old PX and new PX.

If anyone have some official verifiable information regarding Rockets and Mortars attacks during Tet of 1968 and afterwards, please send this information to me.  I distintly remembered the PX, the base church and our compound was hit with rockets.  We had frequent attacks at our compound.  I think I was located in the 700 area.  I remembered my hooch was located near the flight line.

Also I remembered I lived across from the morgue.  If anyone can help me, please contact me or point me in the right directions.  I have been diagnosis with PTSD and I need some confirmations on attacks dates and times.

Please help a fellow veteran. Please respond to me by way of e-mail. My e-mail address is listed above.

Thanks in advance.

I need your help:  The following boiler plate I send to everyone I can think of.  I have lobbied for this official history to be written for thirty years.  I know your contributors have pictures and other documents that would make this history their story ... Our story.  That is my goal, to see a history with lots of pictures told in our own words.  I would appreciate any help you can give me and especially a link to your page  ...

I look forward to hearing from you.

Dear Defender,

The Air Force has authorized the development and publication of an official history of the Security Police.  This is your story and we need your help to make it happen.  We need first person input, events you experienced in your career, original source documents you may have put away, and above all your unpublished pictures.  This is our chance to see that the story is told by those who lived it.  It is your book.

Go to the internet today and log on to http://www.securitypolicehistorian.com and take a few minutes or a couple of hours to fill out and submit the questionnaire.  I will be in touch with you and make arrangements to get your story.  Anything you share with us will be carefully cataloged, reproduced and returned to you if you desire.

My name is Sgt Joseph A. Guastella.  I was a member of the 377 Security Police Squadron from 29 Dec 1969 - 19 Dec 1970.

I worked Charlie Sector humping Elephant walk for 6 months and guarding the F-4 revetments.  I then went on to work the rocket towers, Tango1, Tango Alpha and Tango 10, on the perimeter of Echo and Alpha Sector.

I would love to be able to become part of the web site you have and would love to have my name printed with my fellow Security Policemen.

I ended up going back into the Air Force back in 1975 and stayed 26 honorable years retiring as a SMSgt.  I would appreciate a reply from you.  It has been a long time since Vietnam and I finally have gotten up the guts to be part of our history.

For what it is worth, I also went to Desert Storm in 1989 - 1990 before I retired.

Yours in service, Welcome home

Served in the 377th Security Police Squadron from June, 1968 to June, 1969.
Rank at the time:  Captain
Position:  Assistant Operations Officer, 6-68 to 8-68
Position:   Chief, Security Operations 8-68 to 6-69

Col. Billy Jack Carter was the commander of the squadron when I arrived.  He was greatly admired by every member who'd been through the Tet and May offensives.  Col. Canty Chambers followed Colonel Carter.   Major Irwin Horne became Operations Officer in late June, following the death of the incumbent operations officer, whose name I cannot recall at this moment.  Chief of Security Operations was Bernie DeNisio, who rotated not long after my arrival in June of 1968.  Capt. David Wollstadt was squadron administration officer during the entire period I was in the 377th.  Other assigned (and very exceptional) officers were Jerry Inglesby and Mel Grover.

As far as my personal Air force history is concerned, I served another two years as CSP at Misawa AB (PACAF) and another as CSP at Pease AFB, NH (SAC).  Went into the active reserves in July, 1974.

I entered the Air Force and the security police field in January, 1963, and served until 1991.  Except for OTS, every single day was as a Security Police Officer.  I'm proud that I was a part of a great, but usually unappreciated, field.  I was associated with many, many fine personnel as the result of my security police experience, and wouldn't trade it for anything.

enough of all this.

There were three, #1 and #3 were deployed and #2 was left on standby.  So I asked him where he was deployed, when the attack started, and bigger than you know what; it was the same place that my group was deployed, right in front of all the action.

Comments:  Dear Sir,

I have visited (first time) your Tan Son Nhut Association web site.  Very nice, and I read the After Action section which presented the after-actions report of the Tet Offensive against TSNAB with respect to the 377th SPS.

There is one noted mistake with regards to the staffing of the Security section make-up for the evening before the attack.  The CSC make-up consisted of three (3) SATs, Golf-1, 2 and 3, and not only two SATs.  Somehow Golf-3 was not identified as such in this report.  Golf-3 was formed by direction of Captain DeNisio and Lt Grover the evening before the attack and was comprised of a Sgt (from CSC) and 2 Airmen (pulled from two sectors).  Golf-3 had tactical responsibility of the outer perimeter road East end, including the POL area, C-130 parking area and north to the 056 gate.  In the official after-actions report it is noted that the initial enemy in-coming fire was from the East perimeter and directed towards the C-130 ramp area.  That is correct, but the radio notification to CSC was transmitted at about 0320 hours, and was transmitted by Golf-3.   Several minutes later Capt DeNisio and Lt Grover arrived at Golf-3's location on the outer perimeter road.  Lt Grover instructed Golf-3 to remain in position and engage the enemy as necessary.   Following this they drove West towards the 051 gate as radio traffic identified a major ground assualt at that location.

Having read the after-actions report (I have my own [onion skin] copy), I noticed no mention of a Golf 3 SAT.   Rather, I believe that reference was made to a sector SAT regarding the initial enemy weapons fire.  And that is a shame .... however, the Security Alert Desk Blotter from CSC does reflect "Golf 3" in one entry.

It may appear that I know a lot about the Tet Offensive as do many others of my brothers who were there.  However, my knowledge about Golf-3 is first hand as I was the G-3 Leader, Sgt Chris Godfrey.  And yes, the day before the actual attack I was performing my assigned duty as Chief Clerk for "C" Flt Scty.  After the 54 hour battle I returned to my (CSC) position which included supervising the three main towers and the early posting team, plus being the driver/RTO for the "C" Flt Scty Comdr (Lt) and Chief (MSgt), and a short stint as a map plotter in JDOC and Liaison to the 25th Infantry Division's Crater Analysis team during the numerous rocket attacks following Tet.

I'm glad to have found your TSNA web site.  Thank you for your work on this.

Comments:  Hi fellas.  I have just found your great web site and I'm signing in.  In 1968-69, I was with the 822 Combat Security Police and got to enjoy the scenery around Pleiku and Phan Rhang.  The 822 was disbanded when we returned to the U.S. in 1969 and I volunteered to go back to Vietnam in mid 1970 for a 15 month tour.

I was with the 377th, C flight, Foxtrot sector (Sergeant/Supervisor) until the ARVN took over the sector in early 1971.  I was then assigned (loaned) to MACV and moved off base into a 3 story villa on the outskirts of downtown Siagon.  I lived there with the rest of the detachment of 6 to 7 SP's.  We provided security services, maned a "chase" team to protect the U.S. Ambassador whenever he was on the move, trained Chinese/Vietnames in security tactics, and provided armed courier services for the U.S. Embassy.

I was assigned as the nightime guard check team leader responsible for supervising the Chinese  / Vietnamese guards who stood guard at the individual CIA residences, the Duc Hotel and the U. S. Ambassador's residence in Saigon.  I was assisted by my interpretor, Houng.   Houng kept me out of a lot of trouble.  He was more like a friend than an assistant.  I still don't know how he knew which specific areas of Saigon and Cholon would be "hot" and to avoid as we drove through the curfew-restricted city, alone in my jeep in the wee hours of the morning.  These hot zones were constantly changing and Houng saved my butt more than once.  I never asked him where he got his ongoing intel.  I guess I just never wanted to know.

I was discharged from the Air Force in Oct. 1971.  If you are out there Houng, I hope you made it through all those tough years in good health.

Your friend,

Paul

I would like to be added to the registry.  Name:  Gary L. Trobeck, A1C/Sgt, e-mail address above.

I was stationed at Tan Son Nhut, from November 68, to June of 70.  I was assigned to Charlie Flight, Bravo Sector my whole tour.  I worked the Bunker Line and Tango Towers.  My last 4-5 months, I was assigned to Bravo Bunker 1, the majority of the time.

I saw a few names on the site I recognize, Robert Gallagher being one.  It is great to see someone took the time and effort to put this site together.  It is great to see the recognition for what I feel is an elite group.  I have some old slides of bunkers and towers from Bravo Sector, a couple of the 051 bunker and a couple from the the area of Tango-4, looking out to the village.  Let me know if you are interested.  Thanks again for this great web site and the memories.

God Bless!

I just read some of the stories of the attack at your base and 051.   I tell you that it really hit home, as I was on Bunker Hill 10 at Bien Hoa the night of Tet and reading your stories of the chain of events sounded exactly like the events at BH-10, except we lost one.  I know what you went through and are still.

Let me say one thing that just does not get said enough.

GREAT JOB and WELCOME HOME.

Those we left behind will NOT be forgotten.  Sad to say it takes 36 years to say thanks but I am and will always will be damned proud of the job that we did especially with what little equipment we had.

To Coggins, my hat goes off to you.  I will read up more on that attack soon.

I was stationed at Turner AFB, Georgia prior to Nam and looking for anyone who might have been there and wants to talk.

We started out with three clips for our M16's, jeeps borrowed from VNAF and WWII - Korean War C-Rations.

Was saddened to read about what happened to the men at 051 Gate during Tet but proud to read about the Presidential Unit Citation.

I was then transferred to the 35th in Phan Rang as Combat Supply Squadron.  I stayed there until July 1967 and was once again transferred to the 377th Combat Supply.  There, I was trained as a Chemical, Biological and Radiological surveyor.  Only to be augmented to the 377th Security Police Squadron during the TET Offensive.

I was proud of you guys and to be able to contribute what I could to help.  I was the guard on the Control Tower, after the hit it took.  From there I went to riding armed escorts to officers at night, returning to heir homes in Saigon at night.  I also rode some convoys for the 69th Signal to Long Bien.  I was at the guard shack awaiting assignements for the night when the chapel was blown up.

I respect and salute all the 377th SPS, you did perfor your duty with expertise and honor.  To the brother's that didn't make it, I salute them and I know they rest peacefully in the arms of our Lord and I wish each and everyone of you, that happiness and peace follows you thru out your fives and the lives of your loved ones.

Comments:  For reasons that likely relate to John Kerry, I just did a search on 377th Security Police and found your web site.

I was assigned to the 377th Air Police and then Security Police from 1966 to 1967, at Tan Son Nhut.

I was part of the QRT forces that responded to the December 1966 attack.  I just read Cpt Henry's story and was there with him for some of that night.  CMSgt Mark Ford was a friend.  I remember that evening well.  I left the military in 1972 and eventually ended up in the US Department of State Office of Security.  My last contact with Mark was when he came to Washington to visit me in 1981 following my release from captivity as a Tehran Hostage.  I was Chief of Security for the US Embassy.

I have lost contact with Mark and others from that period of my life.  However, for what it is worth, the experiences of that time guided me for 444 days.

I recently found my slides from Tan Sun Nhut.  I doubt that I have anything you do not already have but am willing to share.

I must confess that I was surprised to see so much about the 377th.  I am glad it is there.

Warmest regards,

Michael Howland
