Comments: It's been awhile, since I posted a note, to the web site and would like to mention that I have spent the past several Memorial Days, here in Canada and they refer to it, as Remembrance Day! There are still a few WWII, Korean and Gulf War Vets here. I felt quite proud, to be mentioned and recognized by the Vets, as a Viet Nam Vet, during the ceremonies, on that day. It still stirs a lot of memories especially of the month of May, I spent as an Augmentee, to the 377th Air Police Squadron.
The only names, that I can recall from the 377th, were those of Bill Price and Hank Hancock. Hank and I ,were from the same block in Waltham, MA. I knew his family, there on Pond Street Court. Bill Price and I met, when I was late for duty one morning (over slept) and he was also at Travis, when I disembarked on Dec 7th 1966 and was full of questions about the attack and who might have paid the price of battle, on Dec 4th 1966, just a few days before I left. The conversation brought tears to his eyes. He really was proud and saddened, to hear my account of what it was like. I remember that small arms fire, going over the barracks, in those evenings, seeing the AP truck being towed, down through the base, with a dead dog, on the back, that got to me. The cab of the truck, was burned. I didn’t join in the battle that night but had my helmet and my barracks M-16, at the ready, across from Charlie Row, sort of as a back up, in case the VC got through, the defenses.
It was some scary times, and times that I’ll always remember.
Have a Happy Thanksgiving and God Has blessed all us Vets,
Joe Potter

FROM THE WEB MASTER: If I have ever sent you a listing of many of the buildings on Tan Son Nhut, I identified Theater # 2 as being in building 28. (This is what the "Tan Son Nhut Welcome Package 1968," states.) I now have a photograph of the building showing the building number and it is # 27 not # 28. Please make the necessary changes. For those of you who have the Tan Son Nhut 2005 CD, there is not much you can do to make the correction. Just make a note of the change.

Comments: To: All 377th Security Police Squadron Alumni and 377th Security Police Squadron K-9 Alumni
The following project needs our help ASAP !!!
Nemo's War Dog Heroes Memorial, Lackland AFB, Texas
A memorial is being constructed at Lackland AFB on the original site of Nemo's kennel by past and present military dog handlers.
Nemo A534, is one of our own 377th SPS heroes. He was a sentry dog, who served at Tan Son Nhut Air Base, from July 1965 to July 1967. On December 4-5, 1966, he, along with his handler Robert Throneburg, was WIA during the attack on Tan Son Nhut. Nemo was retired from duty and returned to Lackland AFB, Texas and lived out his life until 1972 as a military working dog recruiter.
The VSPA and VDHA members working on this project need our financial support to complete this project. Any amount will be greatfully received and put to use recognizing the service of War Dogs of all eras. We will visit the memorial during our tour of Lackland AFB during the 377 SPS Reunion in February.
Donations to the Nemo’s War Dog Heroes Memorial may be sent to:
Nemo’s War Dog Heroes Memorial
C/O Terry Strickland
P O Box 938
Manchaca, TX 78652
Checks should be made payable to NWDHM. All funds will be used in the continuing effort of education and support of the memorial for Military Working Dogs past, present and future.
Thank you in advance, for your support of this project.

FROM THE WEB MASTER: Gary Trobeck, had submitted a Tan Son Nhut Radio Call Sign Roster, to the web master on May 5, 2004. I ment to put it on the web page at that time, but instead, I filed it in his file folder and I re-discovered it again, today.
I have just now put the roster up on the 377th Security Police Squadron, Bravo Sector web page. I put it there as Trobeck was the one who submitted it to me.
Please go to the Bravo Sector and see the Radio Call Sign Roster today.

FROM THE WEB MASTER: To the men who were assigned to Alpha Sector, on 30 Jan 1968, TSgt McKissick sent a scanned duty roster to Sgt Charles Gray. Sgt Gray forwarded the scan to the web master.
(A1C Ron Pope had previously sent me a copy, but the very bottom of the roster had faded over a period of time.)
I have just now added, additional names and corrected the spelling of one name.
If it has been awhile since you have been to the Alpha Sector web page, then please visit there today and read the duty roster.

I was there in 1969 and enjoyed all the entries along with the photos. I spent my first 13 years in the Air Force, as an Air Policeman, at several state side and overseas locations, then cross trained into computer maintenance. I was assigned to the 1964th Comm Gp at Ton Son Nhut and traveled throughout Vietnam where we had the Supply Computers, 9 Bases throughout the country.
Thanks for the outstanding presentation and a wonderful trip back in time renewing old memories. Words can not express my deep feelings for all that served. I have a special place in my heart for all that served honorably and faithfully, including the Dogs that also served honorably in the service of America.
Thanks again for the outstanding presentation.

Comments: Hello, My name is Steve Gilzinger, I was stationed with the 377th Security Police Squadron, from Mar 1972 till Feb 1973.
I have written to this site once before and thought, that I would be listed under Heavy Weapons, as I drove unit 68L248 (V-100) but I have yet to see my name listed. The odd thing is I never gave the history of the 377th much thought until 1998, until when I was sitting in the day room of a barracks at Altus AFB studying for my final test to become a loadmaster on the C-5. When I heard some much younger former cops talking shop (cop) talk. I happend to mention my previous assignments when one of them mentioned that the 377th SPS was a subject, at 7 level school, being the most decorated SPS in AF history. It made me pause and be proud, as here I was at 45 years old, still in the AF (reserve) and people were still talking about our squadron. Now I'm 51, still in the AF and proud of it.
Last May, I was the 1st and 2nd, Westover aircrew, into Bagdad and the first thing I did, when we were able, was to thank the cops for providing our security.
I'm still a cop, civilian, at the base "Westover". It would really be nice to hear from former comrades.
Thank You,
Steven P. Gilzinger

Comments: It was November 1968. I had just spent one year in Vietnam and had extended for another six month tour. My family was with me at the local airport and I was just about to board my plane. I
just observed General William C. Westmoreland, in front of me at the check-in counter. He got his ticket and shortly there after, I got my ticket. I told my family who he was and walked over to him and apoligized for interrupting him, but I wanted him to know that I was one of the military men who was at Tan Son Nhut, during TET 1968, which was Jan 31, 1968.
Gen Westmoreland, shook my hand and patted me on the back, thanking me for my service.
I thanked him for the job that he was doing also.
My family thought it was great that a four star general was
talking to me and thanking me for my service.
General, I have always remembered out chance meeting and my family will remember you in our prayers over the next several days.

Worked at various duties. Was on QRT -- as was most of the base when President Nixon paid a Vietnam visit.
Glad to see all the activity on the site.

Comments: I'm the Alfred H. Brown on your list for 4/72. I was assigned to the 377th SPS, K-9 Section, at Tan Son Nhut from 4/72 -3/73. My K-9, was LINDY ... I do not remember his tatoo number
... God, I wish I did. 7M44 comes to mind but that may have been another K-9, I had in the states.
To this day I still have Lindy's Choke Chain, Leash, and Muzzle. I also have my K-9 Patch and a K-9 patch I picked up from the South Vietnamese Army.
It was great finding this page. To see my name listed took me back to that time frame.
Thanks again.

FROM: Keith Nolan
SUBJECT: BOOK ABOUT THE BATTLE FOR SAIGON, MAY 1968
Gentlemen, as you know, I've been out of contact for a good many months. To
explain the situation, let me offer a chronology of the manuscript to which
you contributed your time and memories:
1.) I originally contracted with Presidio Press in the Summer of 2000 to
write a historical account of the 9th Division's battle in southern Saigon during
the so-called Mini-Tet Offensive of May 1968.
2.) The next four years were spent doing document research and conducting
interviews with veterans like yourself. After the rough draft was circulated
for comments and corrections, the final manuscript was finished and sent to
Presidio Press in March 2004.
3.) By this time, Presidio Press had been absorbed by Random House. The new
owners immediately fired the entire staff of Presidio Press and replaced them
with their own people. The new staff then began going through Presidio
Press's contracts, rendering a good number of them null and void. After the new
staff reviewed my Mini-Tet manuscript, they decided to tear up my contract, too.
The official reason I was fired was that the manuscript described too many
controversial incidents, and fearing lawsuits, the new staff did not want to
risk publishing it. More to the point, the new staff at Presidio Press (unlike
the old staff, which had a genuine interest in preserving history) did not
think there was much profit in publishing a book about an obscure battle from an
unpopular and long-ago war.
4.) I was fired around May 2004. After going into a major funk (I was
literally sick at heart that the story of your battle in Saigon was to remain
untold, that all the work we had all put into the manuscript had gone to no good
end), I got together with a literary agent and began looking for another
publisher.
5.) After collecting numerous rejection letters, my agent finally found a
publisher (MBI Publishing) who wanted the manuscript about the battle in Saigon.
A contract has just been signed to that effect.
6.) MBI Publishing plans to release the book during the Spring or Summer of
2006.
In any event, I cannot tell you how relieved I am that the book will finally
be coming out. Thanks again to all of you for your contributions. Now,
please keep your fingers crossed that no more hiccups develop!
Best Wishes,
Keith

The Private History of Vietnam
Art Beltrone and Jan Scruggs will discuss two books in honor of those who served during the Vietnam War. Beltrone, author of Vietnam Graffiti: Messages from a Forgotten Troopship (Howell Press, 2004) tells the story of the General Nelson M. Walker, a 608 foot long troopship built in 1945 and used in three wars. While preparing for a movie, Beltrone noticed hundreds of bunk canvases covered with inked messages left by its previous passengers. The author explains, the collection of canvases on which the graffiti appeared shows what the people were thinking as they were on their way to a combat zone. Jan Scruggs, Founder and President of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, discusses Offerings at the Wall: Artifacts from the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Collection. (Turner Publishing, 1995) The first offering to the Wall, a Purple Heart thrown into the monument's cement as it was being poured, presaged the medals, insignia, MIA bracelets, bullet casings, photographs, and flags from coffins that survivors have left at the Vietnam monument. Each night the items are warehoused and cataloged. Scruggs book portrays a sample of the 30,000 objects commended to the dead.

Comments: Found your website thru the Tan Son Nhut Assocation website and decided to "rummage thru the attic of my mind".
I arrived at TSN, 1 Apr 1966 originally assigned to the 6250th AP Sq. I guess you could call me a "charter member" of the 377th AP/SP Sq. Rotated back to CONUS 1 Apr 1967. Was there for the attack in Apr 66 and Dec 66.
Was assigned initially in Customs duties at the Airport (approx 3 months) and selected for special duty working the 50 foot tower near the 051 gate, call sign Alpha-15.
Very interesting looking at the photos of the last area I lived in on the base. I initially lived in the "hootches" near the main gate (along with 75-90 "cops" in our hootch.)
I sent my photos of that area and other places on the base to Dr John Brokaw who is President of the SP Association and is doing a history of the Air Police/Security Police/Security Forces career field.
Also sent copies to the 377th SF Sq currently located at Kirtland AFB, NM for the museum they are putting together of the 377th, so others coming into the unit can see what their "ancestors" did.
Thanks for the visit down memory lane.

It took all of us, 377th Security Police Squadron, all of the Tan Son Nhut Augmentee's, U.S. Army, USAF pilots flying their jets, people like you who went to their weapons conex's and obtained weapons, Republic of Vietnam Army and civilian's working on base to help defend it.

Comments: On this anniversary of the 1968 TET Offensive, I would like to take this opportunity to say, "THANKS" to the members of the 377th Security Police Squadron for saving my bacon. As a young SGT stationed at TSN, I did not have a real appreciation of what was really happening that night and the rest of that week until much much later. (We did not have the communications that we have now so the word was very slow in getting out to the troops.) I have since read the after action reports and have had the opportunity to talk to many others who experienced that nightmare and have concluded that the “cops” saved not only me but TSN that night.
A BIG THANKS and Welcome Home!

Spent a month and a half at Tan Son Nhut, in June / July 1968. One post I had, was in the Communication Tower, was right next to the MACV building. Up about 100 feet, just room for two of us. Funny I have a real fear of heights now!!
The other post, was in a tower close to a graveyard. Was at Bein Hoa before that, then went to Pleiku for 2 months.
Retired in 1984 and now live in Fort Walton Beach FL.

FROM THE WEB MASTER: Today, I have a special request for anyone who comes to the 377th Security Police Squadron web pages.
An active duty United States Air Force, Security Forces man needs our assistance.
His name is, SrA Brian Kolfage, Jr. While serving in Iraq on Sep 11, 2004, his base camp came under mortar attack and SrA Kolfage took a direct hit. SrA Kolfage lost both of his legs and one of his arms, nearly costing him, his life.
SrA Kolfage is not asking for any assistance. It is his friends, like you and me, who have taken up the banner and ask you for this assistance, for him.
I have a two page .pdf that explains his story and how to send assistance to him at Goodfellow AFB, TX.
If you can assist, I will email you the two page .pdf to you and let you make up your own mind.

Most of my time was spent on Alpha Bunker 10 and SARTS.
The 377th and Vietnam was a big part of my life and now 36 years later, I still think of those days almost daily. I served with Tom Tessier and it brought memories when I saw him listed in the Tango Sector listing. Do you have a newsletter?
Thanks for the memories.
