For Your Information:

The Alabama War Dogs Memorial Foundation and Memorial is in desperate need of your help.  The Alabama War Dogs Memorial is short of funds, and at least $30,000.00 is needed by December 1st, 2009, or Clark Memorials, the company who built and installed the memorial is threatening to not only take legal action, but possibly take back the Alabama War Dogs Memorial, remove it from it's current site at the USS Alabama Memorial Park, melt down the bronze of all the plaques, statues, and re-use the marble used to create the memorial.

Of course, I realize that in todays financial world with unemployment running nationwide from 10 to 18%, people losing their jobs, and each and every one of us uncertain as to our financial future, that it's hard for any of us to give any money to any charitable organizations, memorials, or worthy causes.  Clearly, all of us in our great nation are just having a hard enough time holding on to our own jobs, keeping our families together, and taking care of our own houses, and budgets.

But, if you can please spread the word to everyone you know in the War Dog Community, the Police K9 communities, Federal K9 communities, animal organizations, and anyone else you can think of, it would be appreciated.  If we can get the word out and each and everyone of us can give $5 or $10 dollars each, it would go along way to ensuring that the Alabama War Dogs Memorial can be completely paid for, and out of danger.

Also, anyone that you can forward my email to in the news and or newsmaker community, newspapers, tv networks, etc., to get the story out about the Alabama War Dogs Memorial, it would be appreciated.

I want to let all of you know that I am no longer officially part of the Board of Directors, nor have anything officially to do with the Alabama War Dogs Memorial Foundation, as I had decided at the beginning of the year to stop all personal volunteer committments since my last eight years have been spent as part of the National War Dog Memorial and the Alabama War Dogs Memorial foundations, and plainly, I needed time off to give my family and job the dedication that had been lacking in the last eight years.

If you have any questions, please contact the Alabama War Dogs Memorial Foundation through John O'Malley at   or donate to the Alabama War Dogs Memorial through their website at:   http://www.awdm.org

Comments:  Major Ruth Sidisin, was the nurse at Tan Son Nhut, who got all the other nurses to wave to the security police as they would go by the female officer barracks.  After getting to know one another, the security policemen would call to the Major on the balconey, "Hi Mom!"

The Major and the other nurses and ladies enjoyed the exchange of words.

On Mother's Day 1969, the security policemen got Major Sidisin a beautiful bouquet of pink gladioli flowers.

Near Dec 1969, the security policemen learned that Major Sidisin "Mom" was to PCS back to the world.  The security policemen presented to "Mom" a plaque from her boys.

Comments:   Please post this as others may have had the same wonderful experience.

To many of us on Charlie flight and to few of us assigned to Bravo Sector, the driver operating the 2-1/2 ton,"Duece and half" truck carrying us, would deviate our route and drive by female quarters.

We assumed all were nurses, however there were women who served in other fields of the military.

Anway where was a major who was a nurse and she would stand out by the balcony on the second floor and wave at us.  We affectionately gave her the name of Mom.

So everytime we drove by, she would wave at us and we would yell back, saying "Hi mom".  Not all the time but often there were other females who would join her and do the same.

We just wanted to see some "round-eye" women and in those years the military was mainly comprised of men.   Sometimes we would stop and for a minute or two make some small talk.

I think once or twice we gave her some small gift, but I don't remember what it was.  I think it was during Christmas and then when we learned Mom was PCS'ing back to the states.

As I remember it now I can still see the figures and remember the corner of the building where they all stood for us, just helping making our nights a little more pleasureable.

"Waving To The Security Policemen
   By:  Carol Bessette

I am hoping that some of the former Security Police members can fill in the blanks on this story -- or at least will remember what happened.

I lived in one of the two female BOQs that were behind the VNAF Chapel (which had the impressive hole in the roof from an earlier rocket attack).

During the first half of my tour (April 1968 -- May 1969), there was a nurse who had started a tradition of standing on the second floor balcony of our building and waving at the SPs who passed, late in the afternoon, for a shift change.

Charles Penley, who is my guru on "all things TSN," has told me that the SPs could have been going to Bravo Sector, Charlie Sector, Delta Sector, or Base Police guard posts.  (We just told at the time that they were going "out to the perimeter.")

This grew to be quite a "tradition."  Other women in the "Q" who were off-duty would join her, and the women would wave and shout and clap for the guys, and the guys would wave and holler back.

This nurse must have worked a shift where she'd be back in her quarters by 1600 or thereabouts.  I only got to participate in this "tradition" once that I recall.

I worked at 7AF Intelligence, and we worked until about 1800, so I was rarely there.  (I worked in the secure area "behind the banana trees," which had an SP post to check us in and out.)

This went to the back of my mind until November 1992 and the tenth anniversary of The Wall.

Living in northern Virginia, I went into DC with a relative and a friend, both Vietnam vets, on November 11th to walk in the 10th anniversary parade.  It was also the dedication of the Vietnam Women's Memorial, so there were many women there.

The three of us were heading for the Virginia section of the parade when someone told me, "Quick, go up to the front of the parade.  The women are walking there and you should be there."

So I did, and there were probably about two dozen women in our contingent.  As we walked and talked, this story suddenly came into my head and I mentioned it -- and someone in the group said, "There she is, over there."  And it was the same woman.  With the crush of people and all that was happening, I never got to talk to her.

In retrospect, I lived in the same small building, but I had never talked with her.  We never really socialized with anyone other than the people with whom we worked.  (Talk about staying in a small circle!)

If I had it to do over again, I would have expanded my circle -- and talked to this woman (and the others).

Does anyone remember this?  I have a vague memory of being told at the time that she had been invited over to the SPs' area and they thanked her and "made a fuss about her."  I hope that happened!

Maybe this will ring a bell with someone --

"Welcome Home Brother!

Comments:  My name is TSgt David C Johnson, USAF, Retired and I served with the  377th Security Police Squadron from Jan 5, 1972 to Jan 6, 1973.

I can't remember what flight  I was in but I lived in the 1300-Area next to the BX and  across from Camp Alpha until after a rocket attack in April.  After  that time the squadrons were inter- mixed throughout all the barrack  areas.  I ended up in the 1200-Area, near the dining hall and the  Mexican Reataurant and the wonder building.  The wonder building was an  open aluminum quansit hut where we had a musical festival.  It was  called "Namstock, 3 days of war and music".

There was a patch similar  to the Woodstock patch (which was the dove perched on a guitar neck)  however ours was a hawk perched on the barrel  of a M-16 rifle.

I was only an  A1C when I arrived but was promoted to Sergeant.  I had been pulling  gate duty and patrols (victor callsigns including Victor-4 which took  chow and drinks to the posts.

I was also assigned duties at 7th Air  Force Headquarters.  The worse duty I pulled was security at the clinic  watching a ward of substance abusers that shipped home 40 troops every  morning and refilled the 40 beds every evening with troops trucked in  from TC Hill at Long Bien.

I no longer have any pictures or mementos from my time there.  After a  bitter divorce, my ex's family destroyed everything rather than give  it back to me.

I have conversed with some brothers in arms via Classmates.com.   They  advised of a Tan Son Nhut Association and a 377th SPS veterans  association.

I would appreciate information in becoming part if these  associations.

Thank you,

Comments:   I came upon the 377th site and was taken back to TET 1968, Reserve Security Alert Team (RSAT) did not know where the 0-51 Gate was located.  The First Sgt [don't recall his name] told me to drive the 12 man RSAT team to the 0-51 Gate to find out what was going on from what Tango 4 was reporting.

We came within a few hundred feet of the 0-51 Gate, when we came under attack and deployed beside a bunker on the road, about 300 feet from the curve in the road where Sgt Palmer was hold up.

We had very limited ammo but returned fire to the Viet Cong and NVA.  The M-60 machine gun we had would fire a few rounds and jam.

I remember Hutchings was praying and fighting the M-60.  I would try to feed the ammo but nothing worked.

We were out of ammo in short order and laid in the tall grass in the field.  I believe it was daylight before we received additional ammo and I believe a helicopter finally dropped us a box of M-16 rounds early in the AM, on Feb 1, 1968.

That afternoon, when we assaulted the 0-51 Gate and Coggins appeared was an unbelievable sight after all the punishment the bunker had taken during the night.

I don't remember the Airman's name that approached the 0-51 Gate and threw the grenade into the bunker, to end the stalemate.,

I also wish I knew the name of the Sgt that was shot in the wrist as we swept the tall grass that afternoon, between the 0-51 Gate and the runway.

The NVA we approached that afternoon, threw a grenade in between us and to this day I don't know if it went off or not.  I just remember he shot and flipped a grenade with his left hand and we hit the dirt and Hutch and I empted our clip in the direction of the NVA.

I would like more info about the guys.

I do have copies of Central Control Alert Blotter that Sgt Bloom and (I believe Sgt Carter was his name) kept of that morning of the attack.  Giving a detail of the attack from 0320 hrs to 0614 hrs as well as the After Action Report filed by Col Carter on Feb 9, 1968 with details of the attack by the 271st Regiment of the 9th Viet Cong Division, Main Force with estimate strength of 2000 to 2500.  If it is of interest I can fax

Comments:  Before I found the VSPA, I had no idea that the 377th SPS had received the Presidential Unit Citation.  Once I discovered this fact (via VSPA), I was ultimately able to have my DD-214 amended to add both the PUC and the VN Gallantry Cross (I was unaware of the our eligibility for either).

My law partner is quite the military historian even though he was never in the military.  He advised me that the PUC was the functional equivalent of each member of the unit being awarded the Air Force Cross (I was stunned!).  Anyway, I looked it up on Wikepedia and, sure enough, the award is extremely prestigious.  The problem was, in listing the recipients of the award (all services, all conflicts) the Wikipedia article states there was only one Air Force unit awarded the PUC (someone subsequently did edit to add another unit but the 377th is still not recognized).

I looked into editing the article but it's beyond my technological capabilities.  It sure would be nice to have someone tech savvy go to Wiki and do a nice write-up on our squadron and the PUC.   Wikipedia (subject to the author's authentication of the facts) allows the article to be amended quite extensively to reflect not only the award of the PUC to the unit but the facts leading up to it.

Thought you might have one of our own with the right tech ability go into Wiki and get the squadron the recognition it deserves.

All the best and please feel free to write or call if I can be of any assistance.

Sincerely,

David Thatcher

Comments:  I was in the 505th Tactical Control Group.  Our barracks was right next to your chow hall --- in fact we shared the chow hall with the 377th.  I was in country from Sep 1967 to Apr 1969.

I remember Christmas of 1968 when our maintenance people put florescent bulbs on the side of the raydome in the shape of a star and a Christmas tree.

Every 7 seconds, then the radar would sweep by the bulbs the radiation would cause them to light up.  I also seem to remember Charlie getting irate about that and sending in a few rounds.

Sorry, I don't have any pictures.

I was the mess check at the chow hall during one of the worst days of Tet ---- the day one of our people was killed on the radar tower.

I was the only one in the chow hall that was armed when a hell of a fire fight broke out out back behind the chow hall.  The ARVN pulled up with an automatic weapon and things got really weird.  We were told there was enemy in the compound but it may have been a case of nerves.

You boys of the 377th Security Police took a well deserved place in the history books during Tet.  I still carry the names of the boys of the 0-51 Bunker, in my wallet.  Had it not been for the 377th SPS holding the line (against all odds) long enough for the 25th Infantry to come in with armor Tan Son Nhut would have been lost.

"Thank You" and "Welcome Home"

You helped me out once before and I ask for your help again.

The US Army man that I am trying to help, arrived at Tan Son Nhut on a charter flight, on his way to Thailand the night the terminal was hit (I am assuming Jan 31, 1968).

He was with a medic, and he and another medic, both worked assisting the wounded at the Tan Son Nhut Terminal.

Questions to any who can help me in assisting this former US Army man.

Question:  Can anyone confirm that the terminal itself was hit by a rocket or mortar?

We know that the Control Tower was hit but was the terminal hit?

If you have a photograph of the damage to the terminal, that would be of great assistance.

The US Army man states that several US Servicemen died at the terminal during this attack.

Mike Dunne

1.  I have sent Mike Dunne two photographs of the Control Tower showing the damage done to it by a rocket or mortar.

2.  I have sent Mike Dunne twenty four names of men who died on Tan Son Nhut and eliminated thirteen names as they were identified as being KIA at the O-51 Bunker and nearby area.

Question:  Do you know of any names of US Servicemen who died at the Tan Son Nhut Terminal?

Comments:  I have just recently discovered other web-sites for other organizations such as the TSNA.  I had no idea at the time I was on TSN, that so much of the war was over for so many.   I'm not speaking of our deceased brothers/sisters.  I am talking about the number of US troops that had been shipped back to the US (or other assignments).

I guess because we (meaning the USAF troops that I worked with) were not combat troops, we were not given the kinds of information that let us know how the war was going.

NOTE:  I realize that after all these years, I (or anyone else) can remember every day over there.

I guess since I was taken off the flight line (because of a hearing loss), I wasn't able to catch all the scuttlebutt that flowed between the troops.  It wasn't until the last few months of my tour that I volunteered for Security Police augmentee duty.  I went through a few days of training, but was never called upon (much to my disappointment).

To the point. I have seen many names show up of USAF personnel that arrived in 1970 or later, at locations such as Tuy Hoa.  It listed their time frame from 1970 until closure.  Does anyone know when Tuy Hoa was actually closed.  I have seen several mentions by our TSNA buddy "George (Kahuna) Bontya of his duty there.

No matter where they served, or when, all are part of our lives for evermore.  We must never allow time to displace our love and respect for our fellow "brothers/sisters in arms".

Regards,

Comments:  I also served in the 377th Security Police Squadron on Tan Son Nhut Air Base, Vietnam.

I have just recently found your web page and think it a fantastic thing you have done in remembrance of all who served in the 377th.   I find it a great service to all.

I still have a few photos of my time at TSN, 1971 - 1972 and if I can add them to any collection you have going, I would be honored to supply them.

I now work for the US Army but have not forgotten my background as a proud Security Policeman who served 22 years in the USAF and am a retired MSgt.

It may be possible to make contact with some of the men I served with through your website.

Thanks for a terrific website.

I am helping my Great uncle, Albert Dillion, locate a man named Gary Haynes.  The information that he gave me is, 377th Security Police Squadron, Tan Son Nhut Air Base, Vietnam, March 1968 - 1969.

He is also looking for a man that he knew as Frank Jalewski or Zalewski.

If anyone has any information leading to the where-about's of these two men it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Comments:  My name is Dale Borland, I was in the 377th Security Police Squadron from Feb 13, 1968 until Feb 13, 1969.

I read through the guest book and the only name I recognized was Phillip Block he was in the bunk below me, in the 1300 area.  He helped me a lot trying to get used to the post TET environment.

I spent most of my time either at JDOC or on the perimeter.

I was on the line in a QRT on May 6th 1968 when things were fast and furious or should say hot and heavy.  I manned an M-60 that day and will never forget the sniper bullets bouncing off the road in front of me, and snapping past my ears.

Over the years I’ve looked at this website but today I was looking for Joe Payne’s name out of curiosity.

I just joined the Tan Son Nhut Association and would like to attend the reunion in Pigeon Forge, I live in Mooresville North Carolina so it’s not much of a drive from here.

I’ll be checking in from time to time.

Happy trails to all you guys.

Comments:  Bob Laymon received word recently from Tom Norris - Medal of Honor, that Norris would not be able to attend this year's TSNA 2009 reunion.  Norris was just notified that he, Goldie Hawn, Connie Chung, Carl Bernstein, Ben Stein {and other notables   http://blairalumni.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=43&Itemid=79  are going to be inducted into their Montgomery Blair High School Alumni Association Hall of Fame, in Maryland  http://blairalumni.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=226&Itemid=78  and  http://blairalumni.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=242&Itemid=1  on the same night as our TSNA banquet.

Tom promised that he WOULD attend next year's 2010 TSNA reunion as our guest speaker, and to please check with him before we picked a 2010 date, to ensure his calendar availability.   Coincidentally, Darrel Whitcomb also has a conflict this year, as he wants to attend his RAVEN FAC reunion in San Antonio, TX {same weekend as TSNA}.

Not to worry - I suggested to Bob Laymon that we find another Medal of Honor recipient … and he did!!!

Mike Thornton, then-Petty Officer (Engineman) 2nd Class (now-Lieutenant, U.S. Navy, retired).  Mike received the Medal of Honor for rescuing WIA Tom Norris and is available to be our 2009 guest speaker in Pigeon Forge.

Mike just called Bob {after getting a call-for-help from Norris} and said he will waive his usual speaking fee {as high as $25K} because Tom Norris asked him to substitute for him at Pigeon Forge, as a favor {…not the first time that Mike has gotten Tom out of a ‘jam’!}.

Thornton, the first person in more than a century to be the recipient of the Medal of Honor for saving the life of another Medal of Honor recipient.  Mike Thornton - "Not Without My Lieutenant!"

Note:  Mike Thornton’s 2009 TSNA keynote speech is timely … exactly two-weeks prior to the 37th anniversary date of his MOH action in Vietnam {on 31 October 1972}.

FYI:  We’ve asked Tom Norris to record an introduction DVD for the 2009 Pigeon Forge Reunion banquet, where Tom {on the banquet projector screen} will explain in first-person to our audience the circumstances why he had to miss 2009 {high school Hall of Fame} and to assure our members he will speak at the 2010 TSNA banquet.  Norris will then set-up the military situation for his SEAL Team reconnaissance mission near the DMZ on 31 October 1972 … followed by a very personal introduction of the Petty Officer who saved his life on that memorable Halloween day.

Here is a great link to an interview with both Norris and Thornton:    http://www.achievement.org/autodoc/page/tho0int-1  {advance through all 9 story page links at the bottom}.

Comments:  The passing of Keith William Nolan, came as a shock to me today.  I have known Keith since I purchased twenty of his books, "The Battle For Saigon, TET 1968."

Then came March 2, 2001 when he emailed me for the first time.  Keith was going to write another book about the "Mini-TET Offensive 1968, which took place on May 6, 1968."  It was going to be called, "House To House, Playing the Enemy's Game in Saigon."

Keith wanted to know if I knew anyone who could assist him with eyewitness accounts.

I gave him the names of quite a few Tan Son Nhut Association members.  Those members are mentioned in the index of his book.

I did not know of his illness and his death will affect alot of Vietnam Veterans.

May his memory be with us for the rest of our lives.

Rest in Peace.  (Silent Prayer.)

Comments:  It is disturbing news to learn of the passing of Keith Nolan.  He was a young historian who devoted his short life to the study of the Vietnam War.  I'm certain that any member who has read any of his books is equally distressed at the news.

He wrote of an incident in his book, "Into Cambodia," that I remember first-hand.  It was the return of the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment from Cambodia in late May or early June, 1970.  They paraded their APC's and trucks past the main gate of Tan Son Nhut to show MACV of their victory before returning to their base camp at Black Horse.

On the day they did it, I was on the balcony of a building just outside the main gate.  It was quite a sight.  The street shook with the roar of their trucks and APC's.  I can remember the blowing of horns and shouts of victory as they passed waving captured Viet-Cong flags.  Over the years I had all but forgotten the incident until I read the account in Mr. Nolan's book.  At the time it happened, I had no idea what it was all about.  But after reading about it, I could put the time and the incident into place.

Keith Nolan's books could do that for many of us.

The Vietnam veteran community will miss him.

Comments:  Dear Mr. Plunkett:

I am writing to you from the US Consulate in HCMC (formerly Saigon), Vietnam.  I inadvertently ran across your website for Tan Son Nhat veterans while doing some research for an exhibit we are organizing at the consulate.

I am hoping that you would help me get out the word to your membership that we are seeking historic memorabilia to document the American presence in Saigon from the earliest time (first consul came here in 1907) to the present.

If any of your members have any materials or photos that they would like to donate, that would be wonderful.  I understand you will have reunion later this year.  If you could be so kind as to make an announcement regarding our project, I would be most grateful.

Many thanks,

Really good time at the 377th Reunion.  Lots of great guys and their ladies, lots of memories, etc.

Have a question, just looking at 377th Guestbook and noticed item from July 18th, (my B-day), 2008, about the passing of Lawrence R. Patterson on July 10th.

Do you recall if he was from Sacramento.  A Larry Patterson and I worked together at a company called LSA, (Logistics Systems Architects), a defense contractor in Sacramento in 84-85 timeframe?

Thanks.

Later,

We had a large group get together for 6 or 7 hours, tour the museum, talk and exchange hand shakes and photos ... The AF Museum staff put aside two large areas for our group which in total was 60 including wives and guests.

Those in attendence for the 377th SPS included the following:

Tom Dierig ... Tan Son Nhut 1970 - 71
Jack Smith ... Tan Son Nhut 1968 - 69
Dave Ramey ... Tan Son Nhut 1969 - 70

Thank you is not enough.  I will pray for them and especially want to remember the four brave souls who paid the ultimate sacrifice that day.  I was saddened to learn that they had lost their lives.

I learned of the attack when I got home.  I was on the Freedom Bird when the attack happened.  God spared me that day.

All who served in Vietnam also need to be thanked and remembered for serving their country in a faraway land.

Despite a foot of snow this week, and frigid temperatures, we have former SP's coming from as far away as Virginia, Florida, Missouri, Montana and Ohio to meet, greet, and remember those that served and those that were lost in service to their country, including the men of Bunker 051.

If you are awake, say a prayer for those, including those lost in at Tan Son Nhut on January 31, 1968 ... we will be having a memorial service at the Defender Fortes Statue at 11AM Eastern Time ... Lunch will follow, and after a meet and greet, we will tour the Museum as a group.  It will be a special day in Dayton.

Comments:  Happy New Year to one and all !!!  We have gotten together many times in 2008.   Helped in sharing our memories and helped other veterans, with their search, for answers.  We all hope that 2009 will be a better year than 2008.

Stay warm and safe,
