Clarence Adelbert Gardner Family
Clarence Adelbert GARDNER, son of George Mack GARDNER Sr. and Orma PIERSON, was born 24 May 1880 in South Boardman, Kalkaska Co., Michigan. He died 21 May 1967 in Traverse City, Grand Traverse Co., Michigan and was buried in Maple Grove Cemetery, Elk Rapids, Antrim Co., Michigan.
MARRIAGE:
Clarence married Amalia V. VOGELI, daughter of John M. VOGELI and Walburga HALLER, on 15 Sep 1909 in Elk Rapids, Antrim Co., Michigan. Amalia was born 2 Jul 1886 in Elk Rapids, Antrim Co., Michigan. She died 22 Jul 1970 in Carson City, Montcalm Co., Michigan and was buried 25 Jul 1970 in Maple Grove Cemetery, Elk Rapids, Antrim Co., Michigan.

DEATH of CLARENCE:
"Traverse City Record Eagle," Traverse City, Michigan, Monday, May 22, 1967:
Clarence A. Gardner, 86, a former businessman and a resident of Traverse City since 1917, died Sunday at Munson Medical Center after an extended illness.
Mr. Gardner was born May 24, 1880 at South Boardman, the son of George and Orma Gardner, a pioneer family in the region, and attended Ferris State College and McLaughlin Business School at Grand Rapids.
In 1908 he moved to Elk Rapids and later lived at South Boardman, Manton, and Alpena before moving to Traverse City, where he was associated with Grinnell Bros. and also was in the grocery business.
Mr. Gardner was a past commander of Traverse City Commandery 41, Knights Templar and was active in all Masonic bodies. He was baptized and confirmed in the Episcopal Church, and when the family moved to Traverse City, became a member of First Congregational Church.
In 1908 at Elk Rapids he was married to Amelia Vogeli, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Edwin (Aphra) Boonstra of Carson City and Mrs. Alex C. (Lucille) Shaw of Four Mile Road, Traverse City, a son, ____, seven grandchildren and 10(?) great grandchildren, and two brothers, George of Vista, Calif. and Frank of Bradenton, Fla. Three sisters and two brothers preceded him in death.
Funeral services under the auspices of Traverse City Commandery 41 will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hibbard funeral chapel in Traverse City, Rev. Dr. Howard R. Towne officiating.
Commital services will be held Wednesday at the family lot in Elk Rapids Maple Grove cemetery, Rev. Kurt Fish of Elk Rapids Episcopal Church officiating.

"Traverse City Record Eagle," Traverse City, Michigan, Thursday, July 23, 1970:
Mrs. Clarence Gardner, 84, a resident of Traverse City for many years, died Wednesday evening at Carson City Hospital, Carson City, Michigan, following a long illness.
The body was returned to the Hibbard funeral chapel, Traverse City, where Order of Eastern Star services will be held Friday at 8 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. at the chapel, with Dr. Howard Towne officiating. Burial will be in the family lot at Maple Grove cemetery, Elk Rapids.
Amalia Vogeli was born July 2, 1886 in Elk Rapids, the daughter of John and Walburga Vogeli, and she spent her early life in Elk Rapids. In 1909, she married Clarence A Gardner, who preceded her in death in 1967.
Three children survive: Mrs. Edwin (Aphra) Boonstra of Carson City, Mrs. Alex (Lucille) Shaw of Traverse City, and ____. She also leaves seven grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, two brothers preceded her in death.
Mrs Gardner was Past Worthy Matron of the Order of Eastern Star, and was a member of the White Shrine of Jerusalem, the Sojourner Club, and the Congregational
Church.

Aphra married Edwin R. BOONSTRA, son of Sake BOONSTRA and Adriaana DEGRAAF, on 15 Aug 1930 in Traverse City, Grand Traverse Co., Michigan. Edwin was born 2 Jan 1900 in Zeeland, Ottawa Co., Michigan. He died 21 Dec 1978 in Carson City, Montcalm Co., Michigan and was buried in Carson City Cemetery, Carson City, Montcalm Co., Michigan.
DEATH of EDWIN:
"Carson City Gazette," Carson City, Michigan, 28 December, 1978:
Edwin R. Boonstra, 78, passed away suddenly at his home in Carson City on Thursday, December 21. He had retired from a dental practice in 1972, and had just recently returned to Carson City from Arizona where the couple made their home for some time.
Born in Zeeland, Michigan on January 1, 1900, he married the former Aphra Gardner in Traverse City on August 15, 1930.
He attended Hope College, Ferris State College and the University of Michigan where he received his Doctorate of Dental Surgery in 1930, and his Masters of Science in Public Health in 1940. He interned at Bellevue Hospital in New York City in oral surgery prior to setting up his first practice in Detroit in 1931.
Dr. and Mrs. Boonstra came to Carson City to open a dental practice here in March of 1944. He was a member of the _?_.O.E., the Masonic Lodge, and a life member of the American Dental Society.
Dr. Boonstra leaves his wife, Aphra; one son, ____.....
Funeral services were held Saturday, December 23, from the Schnepp Funeral Home in Carson City with Rev. Paul Mazur, pastor of the United Methodist Church here, officiating. Interment was in the Carson City cemetery.

"Carson City Gazette," Carson City, Michigan, Monday, June 16, 1997:
Aphra Gardner Boonstra, 86, Mesa Ariz.: died Friday, June 6, 1997.
She was born June 8, 1910, in Elk Rapids, the daughter of Clarence A. Gardner and Amalia Voglie Gardner.
She graduated from Traverse City High School in 1928. She was married in 1930 to Dr. Edwin R. Boonstra, who preceded her in death in 1978.
She earned her bachelor's degree from Central Michigan University in 1959 and her master of arts degree in 1964. She taught in Carson City, in the special education department of the Ionia school system as a speech therapist, and as a counselor for the physically impaired.
She was a member of Saint Mark's Episcopal Church in Mesa, Ariz., and a life member of the Order of Eastern Star.
She had one son, Thomas Paul Boonstra, who preceded her in death in 1983. Her sister, Lucille Shaw, also preceded her in death in 1995.
2. Lucille GARDNER (Clarence A.) was born about 1913 in Michigan. She died 1995.
