DEATH of HENRY PETER:
"The Clinton Independent," St.Johns, Michigan, Thursday, September 6, 1900:
Henry P. Gardner
A Resident of Clinton County Since 1841, is Dead
Henry P. Gardner died at his late residence in St. Johns at a quarter to 3 o'clock a.m., Friday, August 31, 1900, of Bright's disease and heart trouble, in his 62d year.
Mr. Gardner was born in Hamburg, Lenawee county, Mich., June 5, 1839, the youngest son and child of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Gardner, who removed to Clinton county in the latter part of 1841, when Peter was only two years old. After cutting their way through the unbroken forests for many miles, they arrived at their farm of 360 acres purchased of the government, on Christmas night. They chopped all night to clear a place upon which to erect a log house the next day. This was upon the now well-known Gardner farm in the north-west corner of Bingham township. The logs were piled up and the roof partially completed with some boards they had brought with them and some barks taken from the forest trees.
They began keeping sort of a hotel - furnishing entertainment for persons coming in to settle about and beyond them. Business increased and they added to their facilities in the way of building from time to time to accommodate the demands for man and beast.
Peter had become of age when his father died, and in December, 1859 was united in marriage with Miss Mary Bryant, daughter of John Bryant, in Grand Traverse county.
Peter's mother died in 1876 and left him 40 acres of the old farm, where he continued to live until about 22 years ago, when he sold out and removed with his family to Hastings, Nebraska where they spent the winter, and in the spring pre-empted 40 acres in Orleans county, in the southwest part of the state. Here they spent the summer, and not being satisfied with the country, returned to Clinton county that fall and settled in St. Johns, where he had since lived.
Four years ago the deceased was seized with a severe attack of kidney trouble, which was the beginning of his dissolution.
A widow and four children survive him, being Mrs. Emma Peterson, Fred, Bert and Mrs. A.T.Smith, all residing in St. John. A daughter, Mrs. Minnie Appleman, died four years ago.
The deceased was a member in good standing of the Ancient Order of United Workmen, who attended the funeral in a body.
Peter Gardner was a kind husband, an indulgent father and a good and obliging neighbor.
His funeral took place from the family residence at 2 o'clock last Sunday afternoon, Rev. Laufman officiating. A large concourse of relatives and friends followed the remains to their last resting place in St. Johns cemetery.

DEATH of NELLIE:
"Clinton Republican," St. Johns, Michigan, 30 May 1929:
In the death of Mrs. A.T. Smith, which occurred at her home here at 1 a.m. Wednesday, May 29, 1929, St. Johns mourns the passing of a well-loved woman who has been a widely known and highly respected resident of this city and community all of her life. Although she had been in ill health for months and in a serious condition the past few days her death came as a great shock to her family and many friends.
As a member of the Congregational church, C.C.A., King's Daughters, and Hospital Auxilliary, Mrs. Smith was a ready worker in church and charitable activities. She was a lover of her family and despite poor health, had kept up her work and been happy in her beautiful new home on South Oakland street.
Funeral srvices will be conducted at the residence at 2 p.m. Friday. Rev. Howard A. Blanning of Benton Harbor, her former pastor here, will officiate and burial will be made in Mt. Rest cemetery. Mrs. F.E. Stone and Mrs. Bert Glaspie will sing.
Nellie Gardner was born in Clinton county in 1872 and her entire life was spent in and near St. Johns. She was united in marriage to Alonzo T. Smith, April 20, 1889. They became the parents of one son, Paul E. Smith, of this city.
Mrs. Smith is survived by her husband, son, daughter-in-law, two grandchildren, Bruce and Patricia Smith, and two brothers, Fred Gardner of Owosso and Bert Gardner of New Jersey.
DEATH of ALONZO:
“Clinton County Republican News,” 14 Sept 1944:
Alonzo T. Smith, who would have reached his 80th birth anniversary October 16, died at the home of his son, Paul E. Smith, in Northport, Thursday, Sept. 7, after several months of failing health. Mr. Smith had been confined to the home but four weeks.
Widely known in Clinton county through his early entry into the automobile business, he was for many years an active and progressive St. Johns business man. Starting as a young blacksmith he branched into the wagon manufacturing and in 1910 when Henry Ford put the first of the famous Model “T’s” on the market, Mr. Smith took the agency for Clinton county.
At that time he had several sub-agents in the county and for a number of years he handled many more automobiles than any other dealer. By coincidence, Mr. Smith retired from the business in 1928, the year that the Ford Company abandoned the Model T.
In the early days associated with him actively in the business was his wife, the former Nellie Gardner, who he married April 20, 1889. After graduation from Michigan State College, their only son, Paul, also became associated with the business. Later they shifted their interests to cherry farming near Northport where the son, Paul, and family have lived for the past 11 years and where Mr. Smith has spent the past six years.
Besides the son, he is survived by two grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Archie Wooley of Elsie, and a niece, Miss Birdaline Smith, of St. Johns.
Funeral services were held at Sutton’s Bay on Saturday afternoon and the remains were brought to Mt. Rest in St. Johns where interment was made in the mausoleum after a brief service Sunday afternoon.
