Lewis C. Gardner Family

 

 

 

 

 

Lewis C. GARDNER (Samuel Gardner) was born about 1833 in New York.. I believe he may have died shortly after his Civil War service, possibly in Washington D.C.

 

 

MILITARY:

Lewis C. Gardner enlisted as a Private in Company D, 1st Cavalry Light Artillery Lancers Regiment, Michigan, on 5 Nov 1861 at the age of 28.  That regiment was disbanded by the War Department on 20 March 1862.  Lewis reenlisted in Co. C, 1st Cavalry Regiment, Michigan, on 3 Nov 1863.  He was transferred on 17 Nov 1865 from Co. C  to Co. M.  The regiment was discharged on 25 March 1866 in Fort Bridger, UT, although records show he was sick in Washington D.C. at that time.

MARRIAGE of  LEWIS:

Lewis married Susan DOTY, daughter of Joseph DOTY and Sarah MASSEY, on 17 Jan 1853 in Olive, Clinton Co, Michigan. Susan was born Dec 1836 in New York. She died 22 Jun 1914 in South Bolivar, Allegany Co., New York and was buried in Bolivar Cemetery, Bolivar, Allegany Co., New York.   

 

 

Lewis and Susan had the following CHILDREN:

 

1.  Susan C. GARDNER (Lewis C.) was born 24 April 1855. She died 9 May 1855. She is buried in Gardner Cemetery, Bingham Twp., Clinton Co., Michigan.

2.   Jennie GARDNER (Lewis C.) was born 10 Feb 1859 in Michigan. She died 2 Jan 1948 in Angelica Twp., Allegany Co., New York and was buried in Maple Lawn Cemetery, Bolivar, Allegany Co., New York.

 

MARRIAGE of JENNY:

Jenny married Willis O. DOANE, son of Edwin DOANE and Rosalie STONE, about 1879. Willis was born 16 Nov 1859 in Genesee Twp., Potter Co., Pennsylvania. He died 29 Jul 1938 in South Bolivar, Allegany Co., New York and was buried in Maple Lawn Cemetery, Bolivar, Allegany Co., New York.

DEATH of WILLIS:

"The Bolivar Breeze," 4 Aug 1938:

Funeral services were held for Willis O. Doane, of South Bolivar, from his late home at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon. The Rev. Harley Sutton, pastor of Little Genesee S.D. Baptist Church officiated, with burial in the Maple Lawn Cemetery in Bolivar.

Doane, who had been a resident in this vicinity for the past 30 years, died at his home Friday morning after a long illness.

Doane was engaged in farming for many years but for the past several years had done weather stripping of public and other buildings in Western New York and Northwestern Pennsylvania.

He was born in the town of Genesee, Pa. November 16, 1859, the son of Edwin and Rosalie Stone Doane. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Jennie Gardner Doane; a daughter, Mrs. S.C. Achenbach, Olean; three brothers, Albert Doane, Marathon; F.J. Doane, Lyle, and A.G. Doane, Seattle, Washington; and one sister, Mrs. Theo Callahan, Seattle.

 

 

DEATH of JENNIE:

"The Bolivar Breeze," 8 Jan 1948:

Mrs. Jennie Doane, formerly of South Bolivar, and widow of the late William O. Doane, died at Angelica on Friday, January 2.

She was the daughter of Lewis Gardner and Susan Doty Gardner, and was born February 10, 1857 in Michigan.

Services were held for Mrs. Doane at Loop's Funeral Home and interment was in Maple Lawn Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Harold Latten, George Fanton, Robert Murphy, and Oak Marsh.

 

 

Jenny and Willis had the following CHILDREN:

 

1.  Nina L. DOANE  (Jenny Gardner) was born Apr 1880 in New York..

 

Nina married Fredrick (S.C.?) ACHENBACH about 1900. Fredrick was born Feb 1877 in New York. They were divorced between 1910 and 1920.

Have not found Nina and Hilma in the 1920 census. I found Fred Achenbach living with wife, Helen, 23, and mother Lena Smith, in Olean, New York.

Susan also married (2) William H. POLLAY between 1860 and 1870. William was born 1832 in New York. He died 10 Jan 1896 in South Bolivar, Allegany Co., New York and was buried in Bolivar Cemetery, Bolivar, Allegany Co., New York.

William Pollay and Susan are married. Jennie Gardner is also living with them and is a school teacher. Jenny was born in Michigan. William Pollay was born in Steuben, New York, and Susan Pollay was born in Monroe, New York.

DEATH of WILLIAM POLLAY:

"The Bolivar Breeze," 17 Jan 1896:

W. M. Polly died at his home at South Bolivar, January 10, aged 63 years. He had been on the sick list for five years. He leaves a wife and one step-daughter, Mrs. W. O. Doan of Olean. The funeral was held at the house Sunday morning at 11 o'clock, service conducted by Rev. J.W. Barnett of Bolivar. The body was taken to Bolivar for interment.

 

DEATH of SUSAN:

"The Bolivar Breeze," 25 June 1914:

Mrs. Susan Pollay died Monday evening at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W.O. Doane, at South Bolivar, aged 77 years. She had been in poor health for some time. The funeral was held at the house at 2 o'clock, yesterday afternoon, Rev. F.M. Cole of the Bolivar M.E. church conducting the services. The body was interred in the Bolivar cemetery.
