DEATH of LILA:
"Traverse City Record Eagle," Traverse City, Michigan, Saturday, March 23, 1996:
"Every Student Mattered" to this English teacher.
Educator was one of the founding faculty members at NMC
To Al Shumsky, Lila Gardner Wilkinson was that most remarkable of English teachers: the kind who never complain about all the papers they have to grade.
"This was her job, these were her students, and every one mattered," said Shumsky, who retired last year after 35 years of teaching English at Northwestern Michigan College.
He should know. Wilkinson was his own English teacher at the old Traverse City Central High School and later one of the founding faculty members at NMC. She died Thursday at age 86.
A native of Williamsburg, Wilkinson grew up in the house her father built when she was a baby; she lived there for almost her entire life. She started as an elementary schoolteacher in the late 1920's and was among the teachers who had to endure a 50 percent cut in pay during the Great Depression. In 1934, she married Wayne Wilkinson.
In 1946, she received her bachelor's degree in education from Central Michigan College - graduating summa cum laude, and joined the faculty at the former high school. When the college was founded in 1951 under the auspices of the Traverse City Board of Education, she became one of the first instructors on its faculty.
During her tenure at NMC, she spent a year as a Fulbright Exchange teacher in the Netherlands and a sabbatical year studying at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. She was widowed in 1968 and retired from teaching in 1974 - though she continued working as a volunteer at Munson Medical Center, did some world traveling with her friend and retired colleague Ernestine Johnson, and tutored and cared for several children in her neighborhood.
For the past three years, she presided over an extensive remodeling project in her childhood home, living in the attached garage for much of the time. Friends say it was a "pride and consolation to her" that the work was done before she died.
