Wrestling
fans, I had the privilege of chatting with 3Pwrestling star, Colt Cabana.
Colt is a very entertaining wrestler on the Indy circuit. His matches have
been highly praised and he has what it takes to go a long way in the
business. Colt talks about how he started in the wrestling business, where
he hopes to go, and some of his experiences so far. Be sure to check out
the 3Pwrestling website at www.3pwrestling.com.
Steven: Colt, thank you for
sitting down with me today. Tell the fans how long you have been involved
with 3Pwrestling.
Colt: I was fortunate enough to be a key part in the very first 3PW show
on February 15, 2002.
Steven: Can you tell the fans
what they may see at a 3P show?
Colt: 3PW was a show that
seemed to have a little bit of everything. One thing for sure is that each person on the roster are
wrestlers who still have love for wrestling and are hungry to put on a
great show for anyone who buys a ticket.
Steven:
How long have you
been in the wrestling business?
Colt: My first match was June
19, 1999. I'm almost at the
three-year mark.
Steven: Who or what inspired
you to become a professional wrestler?
Colt: I inspired myself in
all honesty. I actually just
grew up having a pure love for pro wrestling.
I did not really have a particular favorite wrestler or
personality. I just love
everything that has to do with the sport, from the characters to the
drama. I knew it was for me
and it has been a dream since I was a little boy.
Steven: Can you tell the fans
a little bit about your character or gimmick?
Colt: I'm "Classic"
Colt Cabana. The gimmick
isn't necessarily one specific thing, but little random individual stuff
that make up myself; I’m a Pretty boy gone stiff.
Steven: What style of
wrestling do you present to the fans?
Colt: My wrestling style is a
mixture. I can basically
adapt to any situation. I'm
6'1 230lbs. I'm very good at
the basics and can mix it up with the heavyweights.
I pride myself though on being a bigger guy who can run with the
lightweights. Most of the
time it's the lightweights running with me.
Steven: Is there a particular
wrestler you like to model your wrestling style after or do you like to
stick to your own type of style?
Colt: I was actually kind of
thinking about this the other day. Danny
Dominion and Ace Steel trained me. I spent a lot of my early career traveling the roads with
them and Adam Pearce. I
honestly think I wrestle using the best attributes of all three. Big time, I like to mix it up with lucha libre and Japanese
style. I make sure though to
base my selling and the little things after guys like Ted Dibiase, Bob
Orton, Don Morraco, Paul Orndorff, the list goes on.
Steven: What kind of training
did you endure to become a professional wrestler?
Colt: I was trained at the
Steel Domain in Chicago, IL. The
head trainers like I said were Danny Dominion and Ace Steel.
I would train 3-4 days a week from anywhere to 3-5 hours a day.
There was a lot of stress on the fundamentals, being in shape, and
respecting the business.
Steven: Whom would you
consider your favorite wrestler, past or present, and why?
Colt: Like I said, I really
don't have a favorite. I
really enjoyed watching guys like, Curt Henning, British Bulldogs, Killer
Bees, 4 Horseman, Don Morraco, Paul Orndorff, Paul Roma, the list goes on.
The old timers were all so cool to me and I loved the individualism
of everybody.
Steven: What inspires you to
put in all those hours of training and lay your body on the line night
after night?
Colt: I entered wrestling
with a purpose. I don't
understand how some of these people get trained and want to stay in the
same place for 15 years. If
you're going to do it, go all out. Why
do it half assed? This is
what I love to do. I wrestle
two to three shows every weekend and I couldn't see it any other way.
The question should be what would un-inspire me not to be a
wrestler.
Steven: What do you consider
the hardest part about being a pro wrestler?
Colt: The constant pain.
I could imagine how big I would be If I wasn't in pain every time I
lifted a weight. I could only imagine how much pain some of the older guys are
in. Just the basic bumps add
up. There's also a lot of
pressure with drugs and whatnot.
Steven: What is the biggest
highlight of your young wrestling career?
Colt: Highlights will come
when I'm on top. Right now
I'm just trying to climb the ladder of success. Wrestling in front of 14,000 people was cool.
Being able to work regularly for 3PW(next show May 18th) at Viking
Hall is cool. Living my dream
is cool.
Steven:
What goals have you
set for yourself in this business and how do you plan to obtain those
goals?
Colt: My main goal is to be
able to send my kids (when I have them) to college by using pro wrestling
as a main source of income. I
plan on obtaining this by continuing to bust my ass every day and trying
to find that break we are all looking for.
Steven:
What advise would you
give to someone that may be reading this interview and considering
entering the wrestling business?
Colt: It isn't for everybody.
The traveling and politics are enough to make someone go crazy.
Then think about all the pain and suffering you'll take in during
training and matches. If this
is something you've always wanted to do then by all means go for it and
don't look back. Don't do it
half-assed and be in shape. Also, RESPECT the people that have put in
their time!
Steven: There is a lot of
excitement stirring with the new 3Pwrestling federation. Tell the fans
what your experience has been like so far with 3P.
Colt:
3PW was a great
experience and it's only going to get better. It was a very cool thing to make my Philadelphia debut with
the guys that I've been paying my dues with the last 2 years in CM Punk
and Dave Prazak. Everybody is
really professional and they are focused on making the best possible
product they can. The focus
and talent is enough to make 3PW the next big thing.
Steven: Colt, I would like to
thank you again for taking time away from your busy schedule to talk to me
today.
Colt:
Thank
you for the interview. Hopefully
I can shout out to find out more about myself and other Midwest wrestlers
at coltcabana.com and make sure you go to 3pwrestling.com and check out
the 3PW show on May 18th at ECW Arena. |
