A Child Without Wrestling

In last week’s column, I took up for Bob Holly and stated my outlook on his beating of Matt from TE3. I also asked how fans could cheer Austin who walked out on the business, yet boo The Rock who only went to do movies in Hollywood. Keep in mind that Hogan did the same thing in his day and he is considered an Icon now. I got a tremendous response from all of you on that column. Thank you all for the interesting emails.

Hogan is back again and I for one am extremely glad. I really enjoy watching Hogan in the ring because it brings back a great deal of childhood memories. Memories of when wrestling used to be clean entertainment and anyone could watch it. Hogan was like a Superhero to myself and to millions of other kids in the world.

Even though I love the wrestling business, wrestling is something I will not allow my 6-year-old son to watch. There is too much nudity and cussing to allow a 6 year old kid to watch. He knows that his Dad loves wrestling and we even get in the floor and wrestle around for the fun of it. He is familiar with some of the characters like Booker T, Triple H, The Rock, Hogan, Ric Flair and several others. The only reason he is familiar with these names is because of the wrestling toys and games.

I try to let him have fun with wrestling the way I did as a child. There are times that I would love to have him sitting next to me on the couch so we can watch wrestling together. However, that is not possible at this stage of his life considering the adult like behaviors being shown on wrestling today.

We have not been able to watch much wrestling together until I watched the DVD “Hulk Still Rules”. I highly recommend all wrestling fans to view that DVD. It was a thrill to sit and relive those old matches from my childhood. What made it even better was I could experience it with my son. He was able to see wrestling the way I saw it as a kid. It was good versus evil in a clean fashion. Yes, wrestling displayed a lot more blood in the old days, but the blood was shed during battle and it made it seem so much more dramatic and heroic rather than gruesome and violent.

It really bothers me to see a shot of the crowd on RAW or Smackdown and see a kid who is about the same age as my son screaming “Asshole” or shooting “The Bird”. I think to myself, “How can their parents feel good about themselves when they see their child doing these things?”

Do not misunderstand me in this column. I love wrestling and I’m not putting it down in any way. I am old enough to understand and discard anything that may be offending to me. Even though I may not agree with everything that is shown in wrestling programs today, it is a free country and everyone has a right to free speech. Besides, I’m too deep in the business to back out of it now. I’m up to my eyeballs in wrestling and I can’t get out if I tried. It’s almost like the mafia, once you are in, you are in forever, no matter what.

Young kids are not always able to recognize right from wrong. There are so many kids who are being allowed to watch wrestling and you can see the affects it has on them.

The point I’m trying to make is that I never realized just how much wrestling has changed until I watched that DVD with my son. The matches were very different, the demeanors of the wrestlers were different, the interviews were different, EVERYTHING was different. I watched him sit in awe as he watched those matches and it brought back every feeling I used to feel as I watched wrestling as a kid.

I could not help but think to myself if wrestling would ever be a clean form of entertainment again. The chance of that happening is very unlikely. It is a form of entertainment that is meant for adults like myself. It is no longer a form of entertainment that kids can enjoy like I did during my childhood. It is sad to know that kids growing up today cannot see wrestling the way I saw it. They are being deprived of one of the greatest forms of entertainment in the world today because of preferred adult content.

Of course we could still let children watch wrestling every time it comes on television, but I feel we would be doing a major injustice to parenthood. So with that being said, I will continue to tell my son that he is too young to understand wrestling or why Dad sits in front of the computer all the time writing about a sport that kids will never be able to enjoy the way I did.

Even though my son and millions of other kids will never be able to enjoy wrestling the way I did as a kid, wrestling is the way it is and I love it no matter what. Remember, once you are in, you are in forever.

Other notes….
· For the love of God, take the mic away from Scott Steiner. He is absolutely horrible. Back in his old WCW days, you could bet the farm on the fact that Steiner would stutter or slip up during an interview segment. I was hoping he had improved his mic skills when he returned to WWE, but that is not the case. As far as I’m concerned, I’m disappointed with the return of Scott Steiner.
· Are you “Down With The Brown?” D’Lo Brown has a new gimmick and a new manager, Theodore Long. I like his new style and I hope to see more of D’Lo in the future. He is a tremendous wrestler who is long overdue for a push.
· I must admit that I’m pumped about this new “faction” started by Flair. Batista, Triple H, and Randy Orton will make a great group. If you remember, I stated in a column a few weeks ago that these three men should be paired together along with Austin. Austin being a member is unlikely, but I think they will be fine without him. I can’t wait to see more from this new group.

That is all the thoughts I have on my cranium this week. As always, I would love to hear from each and every one of you about this week’s topics. Please feel free to email me at Chairshots2head@yahoo.com. Also, be sure to check out my site, www.chairshots2cranium.com. It has been rebuilt and looks very good. Same features, yet structured better. Until next week, be safe and enjoy life.
