Bob Holly's Point, Dislike For The Rock, and More... |
Before I jump into this week’s topics, I would like to clarify a mistake I made in last weeks column. I stated that Steve Austin used to be a member of the 4 Horsemen back in his WCW days. I was under the impression that he had a VERY short run as a Horseman, but I was mistaken. I apologize for that mistake.
Last week on Tough Enough 3, Bob Holly bruised and battered one of the young contestants in the ring. Since that altercation, Bob has received a great deal of negative feedback for his actions. Some people are saying he was too rough on the contestant and he showed what kind of heartless prick Bob Holly can really be. That may or may not be true. It all depends on the eyes of the beholder.
I don’t think Bob Holly was in the wrong. I believe he was trying to show the young man what he could possibly encounter in the world of wrestling. It is true that wrestlers should be able to trust each other when they enter the ring. Their bodies lie in the hands of the other performer and they must work together like a well-constructed waltz.
It is their job to keep each other safe and put on the best possible show for the fans. However, it does not always work out that way. There are times when wrestlers enter the ring with another wrestler who may not get along with them or like them too well. The other wrestler may have a chip on his shoulder about something or may have had a bad day and feels he will take it out on his opponent.
I’m not saying it is always like that, but it is very possible. Back in the old days, pro wrestling was not open to just anyone. You had do earn your way into the “circle”. You could say it was almost like a secret club. If a regular “Joe” could walk in off the street and become a wrestler, then the prestige of being a professional wrestler would dwindle. With these Tough Enough kids, they need to understand what they are getting themselves into and respect the business. They need to know whether they can stand the pressure and the abuse pro wrestling has to offer them.
What I believe Bob Holly was trying to do was to prepare this kid for the worst. He wanted to let him know not all wrestling matches are going to be a like a well-constructed dance. You may enter the ring with the wrong person on the wrong night.
It seems critics are too hard on Bob Holly. People love to say he is an asshole or some other word that describes Holly in a negative manner. In my eyes, Bob Holly is someone who will give it to you like it is and will not hold back any punches (no pun intended).
With Bob Holly, you know exactly what you are getting and he doesn’t put up a front. Critics need to lay off Bob Holly and respect the man for being honest and upfront.
· I must say that I was very disappointed by Vince McMahon’s “announcement” on RAW. He didn’t announce anything of importance except that Bischoff has 30 days to turn RAW around or he is out. It was nice to see Shane McMahon back on TV and his presence put a new twist on things, hinting he may take over if Eric can’t get the job done.
We shall see how this storyline plays out in the near future. I imagine things will be developing quite nicely for the arrival of Wrestlemania 19.
· The possibility of Bill Goldberg having a match at Wrestlemania is being thrown around the Internet world. Personally, I do not care to see Goldberg make an appearance if it is only going to be for a short period of time. If he’s coming in, then stay in. I have no interest in seeing a 2-month storyline for nothing. Make up your mind Mr. Goldberg. Either you are in or you or out.
· I’m sure it was very obvious to all those who watch the “RAW X” program that The Rock seemed to be very disliked. I don’t quite understand how fans can boo a man who is a good husband and father, goes out of his way to please his fans, and has brought so much to wrestling in such a short time, yet cheer a man who walks out on the business, his fans, and beats on his wife. Can someone justify that one for me? Another thing to keep in mind is how The Rock has never had a problem jobbing to younger talent such as Brock Lesnar and many more when Austin will not. So what if The Rock went to Hollywood to do movies. You would too if you were in his shoes. It’s not as if he has walked out on wrestling like Stone Cold did. What has the world come to when they would rather cheer a quitter who beats on his wife????
