Closet Wrestling Fans

This column is dedicated to all the individuals in the world today who watch professional wrestling, but are too ashamed to admit it. Most of us have encountered these people. They are the ones who chuckle at the mention of professional wrestling as if it is just a pathetic form of entertainment. Deep down inside, they are a fan and watch it on a regular basis. They do not want to admit to being a pro wresting fan because pro wrestling has been known as an “idiotic” from of entertainment. Well, I’m proud to say I’m a pro wrestling fan and I could care less what people think about it. I say to all the people who are afraid to admit they watch pro wrestling, come out of the closet!

I was talking with a group of individuals a few days ago. Pro wrestling was mentioned, and one person began to laugh. I then told him I’m a big fan of the sport and I watch it religiously. It was at that point this individual began to slowly talk about it and he began telling me things that happened on RAW the week before.

I said to him; “Why did you laugh when pro wrestling was mentioned”? His response was he sometimes feels ashamed to admit he watches wrestling because wrestling has always been looked upon as an “idiotic” form of entertainment.

Being a pro wrestling fan is nothing to be ashamed of. It is an athletic and dramatic form of entertainment. Wrestlers put their body on the line countless times to entertain the fans. Whoever labels wrestling as a “redneck” sport or an “idiotic” form of entertainment are the true idiots.

A lot of planning and production goes into a single wrestling show. Production crews spend countless hours every week assembling dramatic and eye-catching sets. Writers spend large amounts of time putting together storylines and scripts. Wrestlers travel thousands of miles to entertain their fans. Why do they do these things? Some may do it because they need a job; others do it because they have a love for the wrestling business that will never go away.

People who like to put down professional wrestling and label it as a useless grade of entertainment trample upon the love the fans have for this great business.

What is so bad about admitting you are a professional wrestling fan? By admitting you are a fan and coming out of the closet, you are admitting to people that you love to watch men and women perform tremendous acrobatic moves in the ring. You like to watch interesting storylines and elaborate sets. You like to watch wresters put 100% of their effort and strength into entertaining the fans with exciting wrestling matches consisting of non-stop action and theatrical promos that leave you hanging on every word.

Wrestling is a great form of entertainment. It’s the only form of entertainment where men and women go head-to-head with one another. Other sports keep the men and women segregated. Wrestling is the only sport where it is ok to throw someone through a table, run them over with a Semi-truck, or deliver a “Chair Shot to the Cranium”.

Some people may say these antics are too far-fetched and a little outrageous. Well, they would be correct. It is these outrageous stunts and far-fetched antics that make pro wrestling so unique. It allows people to use their imagination and see something happening that would not normally happen in the world around them. You can say pro wrestling is a break from the everyday norm. Pro wrestling allows the fans to kick back, relax, and let your imagination run wild.

So, the next time someone mentions professional wrestling when you are around, speak up and say, “I watch wrestling, and I am proud to say it”.
