Has the Hardcore Title Gone Soft? |
Last week's column about the Undertaker
drew an overwhelming response. The majority of you believe the Undertaker has a
few more years left in him and you would not mind seeing the return of the
"Deadman" gimmick. I love getting such large amounts of feedback.
Please keep them coming in the future.
Lately, the Hardcore title has not been living up to its name. When the WWG
first created the title, we saw some pretty outrages matches. The WWF named Mick
Foley as its first champion and it seemed to really take off after that. We saw
everything from street-side brawls to a 24/7 rule that made it possible to win
the belt at any place and time.
So, why has the Hardcore title gone so soft?
Just like the InterContinental title race that I addressed two weeks ago, the
Hardcore title must also involve the proper storylines and wrestlers. We are not
seeing a true 'Hardcore' style that the belt should represent. Recent hardcore
matches seem like regular ones, except for a few trashcans, stop signs and fire
extinguishers.
The 24/7 rule should go back into effect. Make it so that we see the belt change
hands in the middle of an airport or outside the wrestlers' hotel.
Let's see battles outside the arena, as well as inside the ring. Do not just
limit the match to a few trashcans being thrown in the ring and a few ringside
battles. There should be more to the Hardcore division than just hitting each
other over the head with trashcan lids and stop signs. Make the division so
hardcore that all the wrestlers involved with the belt will seem like complete
psychos.
The most important element to this is who will be the psycho wrestlers involved?
Here is my list: Tommy Dreamer, Sabu, New Jack, Hardcore Holly, Crash Holly,
Mike Awesome, Raven, Perry Saturn, Steve Blackman, Bull Buchanan, Ken Shamrock,
Brock Lesnar, Hugh Morrus, Al Snow and Bradshaw.
A few of the wrestlers on my list may be unfamiliar names to some of you. Tommy
Dreamer, Sabu and New Jack were part of ECW. They can be very crazy individuals
at times and would be a perfect addition to the Hardcore division.
Hardcore Holly, Crash Holly, Raven, Steve Blackman, and Perry Saturn have all
established themselves as Hardcore wrestlers in the past. They will help keep
storylines and matches very interesting with their familiar faces. Bull
Buchanan, Brock Lesner, Hugh Morris, Al Snow, and Bradshaw will make terrific
additions to the division. All of these wrestlers posses an aggressive style of
wrestling and all of their characters have been known to be intimidating at
times.
Everyone knows Ken Shamrock. His return to the WWF has been talked about
recently and it is much anticipated. What better way to bring back the former
Intercontinental Champion then to mix him into the Hardcore division and help
make it extremely dangerous. He has an aggressive style of wrestling. Shamrock
is the type of wrestler who will stop at nothing to put down his opponent. If
you mix his Ultimate Fighting style with the hardcore rules, the end result
could be deadly yet exciting.
Brock Lesnar is an up and coming star in Ohio Valley Wrestling. If you have had
the pleasure of seeing him wrestle in person, you know how intense this man is.
He has a very aggressive style of wrestling that has been compared to Bill
Goldberg. He also possesses a very intimidating look that will really work to
his advantage in the future. He would be a great addition to the hardcore
division and it will give him the opportunity to show what he is made of in the
WWF.
The Hardcore division can bring back a tremendous amount of excitement and
thrills to the WWF. Let the wrestlers lay it all on the line and put together a
great display of athletic and insane wrestling matches. It's time to make the
wrestling fans jump out of their seats and stare at the screen in disbelief as
they watch the hardcore division turn the WWF upside down with their insane
bumps and entertaining storylines. It's time to see true Hardcore wrestling.
