My Views on the IC Title Picture

Most fans agree that the InterContinental title does not carry as much prestige as it once did. We have seen many tremendous battles for the IC belt over the years and it has always stood out as one of the most important belts in wrestling.

Now, it seems that boredom, predictability and lack of importance surround the belt. Some of that has to do with the storylines that center around the belt as well as the wrestlers who are involved with it.

Some of you may remember the classic battles in the 80's between Randy Savage and Ricky Steamboat for the IC belt. Others of you may remember the classic battles between The Rock and Stone Cold for the IC belt just a few years ago.

What kind of great feuds has the IC belt produced lately? There's not one recent feud for the IC belt that stands out in my mind, other than the Chris Jericho and Chris Benoit battles for the belt.

The first thing that needs to happen is that we need better storylines surrounding the title, with longer in-depth feuds. To achieve that, you need to involve the right wrestlers.

Who are those wrestlers? Here's my list of wrestlers who should be in the IC title race:

Curt Hennig, Lance Storm, RVD, Edge, Kanyon, William Regal, Christian, Rhyno, D'Lo Brown, Val Venis, Billy Kidman, Tazz, The Godfather, DDP, Test, Goldust. Rikishi, Albert, Personal tastes differ. You may say that some guys I didn't list should be included and some guys that I did list should not be part of the IC scene. I tell you that, if WWF places these guys in the IC title race and develops some good storylines, it will regain its prestige again.

Let me explain why some of these guys made my list and also why other key wrestlers didn't. First, the IC belt acts as a stepping-stone to the World Title. You could say that the IC belt is the world title for the mid-card wrestlers.

Some of the people on my list will eventually make it to the next level and some of them will not. Edge, Christian, Rhyno, RVD and Test could take the next step to the main event level. Test is very close to making that jump now. He just needs a little more time.

The others probably will not make the jump to the next level, but they can definitely make the mid-card ranks a remarkable level of wrestling. Curt Hennig's comeback is truly impressive. He looks like a rookie again and he can really bring some athleticism and experience to the belt.

It's time for Kidman to move away from the Cruiserweight division and show what he is made of at the next level. Val Venis, Goldust, The Godfather, William Regal, DDP and Rikishi all have fascinating characters that will bring some very interesting storylines to the IC belt. Albert, D'Lo, Kanyon, Lance Storm and Tazz bring not only power, but also great wrestling into the picture.

There are reasons for some of the specific omissions, like Booker T, Chris Benoit, Kane, The Big Show, The Hurricane, the Hardy Boyz, Mike Awesome and The Undertaker..

Booker T, Chris Benoit and Kane all need to be in the World title race, because all 3 are main event material in my book. The Big Show needs a gimmick that can get him over with the fans more. If he could ever regain the status he once had in WCW, then he could be in the World title race.

Although The Hurricane has a great gimmick, we still need wrestlers in the Cruiserweight ranks and I don't think Hurricane has established himself yet as an IC title contender. Again, let me stress the word "yet." He will be there very soon.

The Hardy Boyz have seen the single's division before, but it looks as though they would rather remain a tag team. I left off Mike Awesome's name, because I would love to see him make a return to the Hardcore division. If he does, then they should bump him up to the IC title division.

As for Taker, he's beginning to slowly wind down his illustrious career. I don't believe he should be involved in any major title races. Let him just do his own thing and float around from division to division until he is ready to call it quits.

I don't see anyone else on the current roster that should be in the IC title race. Of course, Triple H, Jericho, Stone Cold, The Rock and Kurt Angle should remain at the main event level. Maybe from time to time, one of them could win the IC belt to make things a little interesting and have one of the guys from my IC division list beat them to help put them over more.
