Praise the Wrestlers; Boo the Writers

King of the Ring is in the books and was a big disappointment to many. The PPV lacked a good delivery and surprises. The wrestling performed in the PPV was outstanding as always, but the PPV itself lacked the punch it needed to leave a lasting impression. It was one of the most predictable PPV ever viewed. Jim Ross had this to say in his latest “Ross Report”; “For many reasons, Sunday's KOTR should be most interesting and unpredictable.” Well, Mr. Ross, with all due respect, it seems your views were way off.

KOTR was not very interesting and far from unpredictable. Jericho/RVD was the most interesting match of the night. It was a great performance by both men! After that match, the PPV went downhill. What is it going to take for the WWE to bring excitement and surprises back to their PPV’s? Are fans expecting too much?

Wrestling fans want to be surprised. They want to be able to walk away from the PPV saying, “Wow, I did not see that one coming.” When was the last time wrestling fans could do that? Some may say it was Stone Cold’s heel turn at Wrestlemania X7. Wrestling fans hit the Internet sites for the latest news and rumors and hear various reports that raise their expectation level. Some fans compare the shows and PPV’s to these “rumors” and therefore get disappointed when it does not happen.

On the other hand, WWE writers do not seem to be writing storylines that catch the attention of fans like they used to. The wrestlers go out and give it all they have week after week. Nothing should be taken away from this and they all deserve the greatest compliments for their efforts. What makes things so disappointing is these wrestlers lay it all on the line on a weekly basis and are not getting the reaction they deserve from the fans and the wrestling critics. This all boils down to the WWE writers. Someone needs to light a fire under the backsides of the WWE writers and it needs to happen quickly.

NWA-TNA is making an effort to gain attention of wrestling fans. The XWF is working hard on a TV deal. Competition is slowly on the rise and the WWE better realize how boring and predictable the product has become.

Wrestling fans are beginning to change the television channel a lot quicker these days and wrestling’s once huge fan base has dwindled considerably. Ticket sales are down at WWE events and TV ratings are at an all time low. This is a clear indication fans are not as interested anymore. What has the WWE done about it? Nothing. They have continued to write the same storylines and continued to deliver weak storylines leading up to PPV’s each month.

Look at the KOTR PPV for example. The WWE writers screwed RVD once again. If anyone deserves an Undisputed title shot at Summerslam, it is RVD. He has given 110% every time he steps into the squared circle. Most fans love him and he never disappoints when he comes through the curtains. Instead, writers give the KOTR title to Brock Lesnar. I’m not taking anything away from Brock Lesnar, but I’m not so sure he is as deserving of the title as RVD.

Taker retained the belt and I’m sure most knowledgeable wrestling fans could see that one coming, as well as the Cruiserweight and Women’s title changes, when you consider how the storylines have been playing out over recent weeks. Angle was victorious over Hogan and that one could have been seen from a mile away. Angle was due to have payback on Hogan for exposing his baldness and 9 times out of 10; the younger star will get the push over the older star. Flair was due to have a clean win at a PPV and considering the rumors of Flair getting a huge push due to the lack of Austin; the outcome of his match with Eddie was also very predictable.

The Rock’s role at the PPV was not too impressive. He got involved with the main event match and setup a feud between himself and Taker. Some thought he might be presenting the King of the Ring trophy to the winner. However, fans did not see that happen nor did they see the trophy presented at all. Again, this disappointed could be due to various reports or “rumors” reported on the Internet. Back in the early years of the PPV, they made a big ceremony out of it and really pushed it well.

This PPV was a true disappointment and a slap in the face of all wrestling fans. The WWE knew fans were expecting something different and something great. Instead, fans get the same boring and predictable PPV they have been accustom to for a while now. Chris Jericho made some interesting comments on his commentary, which can be read at www.chrisjericho.com. It’s very hard to disagree with his points. Wrestling fans have grown to expect a lot from their television heroes. I say to the fans, quit looking at the wrestlers and focus on the lack of effort from the writers. The wrestlers are giving you all they have night after night and they deserve your respect and applause. Wrestling fans need more surprises and unpredictability. Once that occurs, interest will spike and fans will be happy again.
