Reason For Criticism

Last week I talked about the negativity that surrounded wrestling in the Internet world. Negative critics and fans have polluted the world we love and sunny days will never shine on the world of wrestling if fans and critics keep spewing pollution from their mouths.

What has caused people to turn on wrestling and criticize it so much? Three words can answer that question; Lack of Competition! When ECW and WCW closed their doors, everyone’s attention then turned completely towards WWE. Instead of having three companies to focus attention towards, there was only one. During the last days of WCW, WWE clearly had the better product and everyone’s negative thoughts and opinions were directed towards WCW and how bad their programming was. At the same time, WWE was being praised for their characters and storylines and applauded for blowing away their competition.

Once there was no competition, everyone then focused solely on WWE and began to look for reasons to disagree with storylines and character directions. A tremendous amount of pressure was then placed on WWE because they were the only ones in the spotlight. It was left up to them to carry the load and entertain the fans as the sole provider of “Sports Entertainment”.

When Vince bought WCW, it was clearly the worst thing for the business. Yes, he got rid of his competition, but at the same time, he put more pressure on his product and his employees. Writers seemed to become lazy once there was no competition to compete with. Fans started noticing the lack of effort being placed on storylines and characters and it began to irritate them. They wanted the same product that blew WCW out of the water, but they were not getting it.

Since that time, fans and critics continued to focus their attention towards all that was bad with WWE and how they thought things should be better. I will admit that I too gave my thoughts on how things could be or should be in WWE. That is my job as a wrestling columnist to analyze the wrestling world and give my thoughts and opinions and offer readers a different perspective. By no means am I an expert on the business, but I have grown up with wrestling as my main interest for 17 years and I have the sense to know when things are good and when things are bad. But there comes a time when you must set aside the bad thoughts and bring in the good thoughts.

It seems that wrestling fans have the idea that wrestling owes them something. A lot of people complain they are not getting the entertainment they want and deserve. Well, in my eyes, WWE does not owe us anything; we owe them. We owe the wrestlers for the time they spend away from their families to entertain us. We owe them for the strain they place on their bodies mentally and physically. We owe the backstage workers that travel to coordinate the events and set up the elaborate sets we look at every week. We owe it to the entire wrestling world for supplying us with a great form of entertainment every single week.

Criticism and selfish behavior must stop. My point was clearly stated and then it was time to focus on what was good about the business. Despite all the bad things that have went on with WWF/WWE over the past year and a half, there have been good aspects; All of which I focused on in my last column.

Wrestling needs another federation because it will continue to strengthen the industry and make it more stable. Everyone knows by now that competition makes businesses thrive and improve. Having more than one wrestling company reduces pressure because it gives fans an alternative and something else to focus their thoughts and opinions towards. Having only one entity focuses too much attention and too much analytical thoughts towards it and nothing that entity ever does will meet up to expectations. WWE has been that entity for too long now.

It is time for another player to enter the game and it is time for the spotlight that has shone solely on WWE to be shared with another wrestling conglomerate. WWE has picked up the ball they have been fumbling for quite some time now has tucked it firmly under their arm again. They are now running for the end zone and scoring the touchdowns they have been used to scoring. If you add another team to the field and let them run with the ball as well, fans will be in store for one heck of a game.
